I truly despise the fact that the “add to queue” action adds a track as the next one to play, rather than putting it at the end of the queue. There is an action for “play next” which is intended for that, and to have two actions perform the identical task is absurd. At the very least there should be an additional choice for “add to END of queue”

Perhaps helpful, perhaps not, but once a track is in your queue you can long-press and then drag it to any position you’d like (you can do that with tracks already in the queue as well). At least with the clients to which I have access.

And just to be clear, I don’t disagree with your sentiment. Just offering a potential workaround to achieve your immediate goal.

Thanks. I’m aware that I can rearrange tracks, but what a PITA when a couple of clicks should accomplish what I’m after. This is especially true with the limited view that the “up next” section provides combined with an hours long queue

Winamp has “enqueue”, which adds it to the end. Now that I think of it, “Add to queue” SHOULD put it at the end, while there should be a separate option entirely for “play next” on an item to have it added to the queue next.

This current behavior is odd…

With plexamp there already is a “play next” option. But “add to queue” performs the same function except in some very specific instances. It’s more than odd. It’s nonsensical

It’s actually not, but it is confusing at times. The actions play next and add to queue both operate on an Up Next region, we copied the behavior from iTunes.

It actually is. And the fact that it’s so confusing at times that it requires a page of documentation to explain the behavior just goes to prove my point. You and I have been over this before, and no amount of explaining will ever make it less absurd. It makes no sense for two separate menu items to produce the identical result. “Play next” should do just that. “Add to queue” should add to the end of the queue. And if not, then there should be a third option called “add to end” that does it. No amount of explaining will ever be enough to convince me otherwise. Especially when there is currently no way to reliably add a track to the end of the queue.

If you have a long/infinite queue, adding to the end makes no sense (e,g, library radio). The addition would disappear into the ether.

If you have a somewhat long queue, and are adding tracks with friends, adding to the end makes no sense. and not having an up next queue makes no sense either as you can only keep trumping each other’s additions.

If you’re building a play queue from scratch and adding track at a time, then the up next region is all you have so adding to queue actually does add to the end.

What are your scenarios?

This is your opinion and nothing more.

My only scenario is that I would like to be able to add tracks to the end of the queue no matter how far into the ether that may be.

Why are you so resistant to making it possible? Is it because it would be a departure from the way iTunes works?

Well, it’s somewhat more since you have to convince me if you want change 😅

Because we haven’t landed on anything better than the existing functionality yet, although we have (recently, even), discussed some possible improvements.

I just looked at the native TIDAL app on my iPhone and it does the exact same thing as Plexamp. Play Next and Add To Queue do the same thing in that scenario (Implicit Queuing). I agree with Elan that adding to the end of a long/infinite queue such as library radio, artist level play all, artist and album mix builders is just “into the ether”. I read the referenced “Play Queue” article a couple of years ago as i was initially confused as well, but it is consistent across the major players and the realization of why those two queue functions are treated the same in that scenario. The main scenario that I find useful when I use implicit queuing functions is to insert a couple of songs in the queue with “Play Next” before continuing on with my “ether-based” generated queue. Knowing that “Add To Queue” does the same thing in that scenario is just… well… I come simply for the joy of listening to my music library with Plexamp!

Nice snark 🙄 You come across, at times, as if you believe that as long as you like the functionality of the app it’s good enough. You also make assumptions about the way others use the app. Not everyone cares about the radio features and Tidal integration. Yes, I do create very large playlists which result in very long queues. Nonetheless, to have zero option for adding a track to the end of the the current play queue, whether it’s 20 tracks long or 1500 tracks long, is absurd. Period.

\*Edits

\*Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate what you do, \*honey. \*😂 I like Plexamp a lot. It’s the best option I currently know of for managing and streaming my personal music collection. I’m invested in it to the point that I have no interest in looking for an alternative. At the same time, I see room for improvement and I believe that as a paid subscriber my opinion should matter.

It does; and your attitude matters just as much 😅

I’m guessing you missed where @elan said they modeled Plexamp after iTunes for those behaviors

That would be an incorrect guess. The one participant I read thoroughly is Elan. It was just an additional comment that TIDAL has this behavior as well. Peace and well being. I like how the founder stays calm…

If I’ve offended anyone I apologize. I don’t mean to be crass. In addition I apologize for making assumptions. Certainly not the first time I’ve ever been wrong.

As far as the issue that I take with the app, when it comes down to it, it’s quite minor considering how functional the app, and all of PMS are overall. Here comes the however… I think what I’m asking for makes sense. It would not be the only app to ever allow adding tracks to the end of the queue. And I’m not asking that any other features be altered in order to make it happen. It can’t possibly be that difficult to add that functionality. How about right there when you click “add to…”? The only option that currently brings up is the most recent playlist (if doesn’t conflict) and “add to playlist” where you then select from the full list or create a new one. Why not just put in the “add to end of queue” right there? It seriously can’t require more than a few lines of code.

Anyway, I digress and I’ll try not to let it get under my skin. And maybe, just maybe, one day it will come to fruition

You might be surprised. In a lot of scenarios, there is no such thing as the “end of queue”. As just one example, Track Radios are built incrementally on the fly by the server, 3 or 4 tracks at a time. This is far from the only such example.

As elan said, we’ve considered many alternatives that all have their upsides and downsides, but none so far have been an across the board improvement over what we have in place today.
