Hey Chris, I’m just wondering if there was any further feedback on this issue. Apologies if your still OOO but I noticed your post in the Stuttering issue. (Which is looking hopeful) ![]()
Which Apple TV have you got?
I’m using the old player and old audio engine (airplay 1?) and my playback with my stereo pair of gen 1 HomePods is perfect.
This is on the Apple TV with the new Siri Remote but the one with the lightning connector - not sure what gen that is
A12 maybe?
Is your Apple TV connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet? Airplay 1 only works on Wi-Fi now. I have the 1st gen 4K (with A10X).
Sorry, yes connected via Ethernet.
That’s interesting! Seems like it doesn’t affect every Apple TV model after all. On Apple forums 4 or 5 people confirmed this bug, at least one of them has the latest (2022) Apple TV box. Maybe there’s some other factor that, combined with wired connection, disables Airplay 1 playback. It does seem like, even taking into account how relatively niche this use case is, there would be a bigger outcry about this issue if it affected every single Apple TV owner.
Oh that is strange. I wonder if I pair my other Apple TV up (A15?) whether it would be the same. I unfortunately have my A10X at a holiday house.
I almost don’t want to investigate further though because I don’t want to break it ![]()
I also am on the iOS 17.1 public beta, possibly pushed a fix in a beta update?
Edit: Just looking back on some of your replies - are you using the enhanced player or old player? I recently changed back to the old player, not just the old audio engine - which could be improving my experience.
That’s the answer! The old player supports Airplay 2 because it’s Apple’s native AVPlayer. And I actually did use it for a while before I found the Wi-Fi workaround, but it’s far from perfect in my experience.
Yeah I got sick of the performance issues with the enhanced player. I’d rather spend the extra time converting my small library ![]()
Oh okay so I could probably use the new audio engine too?
If you’re using the old video engine (AVPlayer), you’re not using either of Plex’s audio engines, old or new, you’re using the native Apple stuff. That also has the benefit of correcting audio sync issues of the old audio engine without introducing the “sound dropping out with AirPlay” issue of the new engine (which this whole thread was originally about
).
Ah right.
I suppose it makes sense that the native Apple player would use its own audio engine too!
Good to know, cheers!
yup I can confirm im using 3 different generations, basically the last 3 Apple TV models and only one is on Wifi, same issues exist on all 3 but to different degrees …
hopefully now Plex developers or employees have seen it for themselves im hoping this gets solved, before Disney and Amazon run out of content that interests me hehe
Apple has fixed the issue with AirPlay over Ethernet in tvOS 17.1, there’s no need to switch to Wi-Fi to get the old audio engine to work anymore. No changes from Plex, though, so we’re back to the status quo.
Hi Chris.
Is there any further feedback on the audio dropouts with AirPlay devices, after your ability to reproduce?
Hi, Nothing new to share. I have the issue reproduced and logged internally in our issue tracking system. We are working on some other issues as Hugo called out here Plex 4K HDR Stuttering on AppleTV is Thermal Throttling - #79 by hsousa and we will reach out when we have more details to share.
I’m chiming in for the worst possible reasons - 1) “Me too” 2) almost exactly the same pathology as everyone else 3) the same regressions with the addition that – a) I’ve tried to hardwire the AppleTV, b) I’ve reprocessed/repackaged/reencoded some of the video w/ ffmpeg with variable success and c) noticed that it is only some packagings / encodings that are problematic. I’ve not systematically gone through but have noticed that there are some seemingly OK files that won’t play on QuickTime on my Mac but with just an ffmpeg copy they will. And some of those are problematic w/ the AppleTV also.
suggest the dev give GitHub - kingslay/KSPlayer: A video player for iOS、macOS、tvOS、visionOS , based on AVPlayer and FFmpeg, support the horizontal, vertical screen. support adjust volume, brightness and seek by slide, support subtitles. a go rather than the ones currently employed in the stack
I think switching to this would solve so many problems with the Apple TV and the iOS devices with regards to compatibility. This is including DV and HDR support and probably the audio issues as well.
Thanks for the suggestion. KSPlayer is actually something we looked into, alongside other options.
We are actively working on this, and started internal testing for some fixes related to the thermal throttling issues that have been affecting some use cases. We’re also looking at how these changes potentially improve audio issues.
No ETA (yet) on when we’ll start rolling out to beta users, but I’m hoping is soon! We have been putting our Apple TVs through literal hell
and the results are promising.
Once this is out, if there are still AirPlay and/or audio sync issues in the wild, we’ll count on this amazing group’s feedback and dedication to help us investigate those as well. ![]()
great news @hsousa. looking forward to the new player options that should hopefully mean we can use the ATV again instead of the andoid renderers most of us had to resort to for the extra codec support
I can’t tell if I’m having a similar issue. I just got an Apple TV 4K 128, connected with WiFi. I am NOT using any Plex app on the ATV, I’m just using it as an audio output for Airplay.
Whenever I Airplay music from my iPhone to the ATV using my iPhone 13 Pro, the audio cuts out for a few seconds very frequently.
If I play the same scenario but choose an old AirPort Express as the Airplay endpoint, Plexamp is fine and never drops audio. The Apple TV and AirPort Express are both connected via WiFi, and are both within 6 feet of the router.
Also Airplay via Apple Music to the ATV is fine.
Seems like Plexamp is broken when the Airplay endpoint is an Apple TV?
Does that jive with the problems people are having in this thread?
