Alexa: Plex content never plays from Alexa to TV

I don’t think this problem is directly related to Alexa. I too am having the same problem but I have noticed this issue also happens on my media remote. I use to be able to just press the play button on my remote to start playing something but ever since the update, it no longer works.

I may of figured something out as ive been having the same issue for a few days. Bizarrly, none of my android or pcs will play the video in the same way you guys said above, but if i disconnect my phone from my wifi and just use cellular data it works perfectly. Maybe the issue lies in routers and ports.

I’m seeing the same thing. If turn off WiFi on my Android phone, I can control the Plex player on it from the Plex skill but not if it is connected to WiFi.

Obviously I can’t do the same with other devices such as my computer, Fire TV Stick, or WiFi only iPad (although the skill doesn’t even pick that up as an available player for some reason).

I wondered initially if it was anything to do with me having a Ubiquiti Amplifi mesh router setup, since different devices may be connected to different access points, but I have the issue even with my Echo, Plex server, and player connected to the same access point.

I’m lost as to what role your phones being on wifi are playing in this??

My issue is between my Plex server, the Plex client on my LG (webOS 5.0.02) and Alexa controlling shows and movies.

That, and using Alexa to start music on my Sonos speakers from Plex using voice commands.

My LG will open Plex via a voice command to Alexa, but then nothing plays. Music from Plex to Alexa also never plays.

I’m confused what role your Android phone on wifi is playing in this scenario of Alexa not actually delivering Plex content to the devices Alexa is controlling perfectly for other playback?

Same problem here. Alexa used to work great, now she says she agrees to play a movie and nothing happens.

NVIDIA Shield Pro, running in docker

Another interesting note… When I was on a different input on my TV, I said "Alexa, ask plex to play " and she said “Enjoy watching on SHIELD” Then, my TV switched it’s input to shield, but no content played This tells me that the shield plex player on shield is receiving the command from Alexa, but ultimately is not initiating playback

Any news on this as Amazon say its a Plex not an Alexe issue and my time limit to return items is running out despite the covid extensions

No update. This still has not been implemented for the new Smart TV Preview app.

I can’t get it to work with anything, PMP(win 10),Plex app (win 10).Plex mobile or Android TV all refuse to play correctly via Alexa

Either uh oh something went wrong
selects a track not asked for but doesnt actually play the incorrect track either
won’t navigate beyond a single back command, wont even go back again one level is all you get
won’t change library
It will intermitantly play music from the artist requested but no chance for album or track asked for

It will skip forward and back episodes (not timeline) it will play next episode when one finishes unless it was the last one in a season in which case nothing happens
It will list new additions but wont play them
It will suggest itmes to watch/listen to but won’t play them

just got a new show 5 and show 8 to replace two of the very original amazon alexa devices and was delighted to see a /plex/ skill. unfortunately i have the same symptoms as some of the posters here–everything seems to work fine up until i try to play something and alexa tells me to enjoy it. but it doesn’t play anywhere.

first time it asked to set up a player it listed my android bravia sony tv and ‘chrome’. but neither worked and after that first time when i set player, only the chrome option appears. no idea if that’s chromecast or if it is supposed to magickally appear in my chrome browser.

and yes i do have remote access enabled on the plex media server. very annoying, but glad it’s not just me.

This thread is about Alexa playing back to the Smart TV apps, which are not yet supported. Alexa should be able to playback to the Plex app on your Bravia Android TV and to the Plex Web client running in a browser. Please note that these can only be streamed to if the app is already loaded and running. Alexa does not have a way to turn on an app. If you are having issues with one of these clients, please start a new thread and provide details.

Heya - Alexa in general is not working for many of. There are several threads going, and no one from Plex has commented. Would you please take a peek and let us know what’s going on? Thanks.

Please point me to the threads you are referring to.

Thanks for replying. Here’s 3:

Thanks!

I’ve responded to the first 2. For 3, I don’t use VLAN so I can’t help there. Technically if Alexa can see both the server and client, it should work. Not sure how to hep though.

Edit - To be clear, those issues have nothing to do with this thread for Smart TVs. Alexa does not work with Smart TVs so it’s not broken. Not working on those other platforms, is broken.

Thanks for your efforts on this.

I’ve tried this tonight.

I can get music to play on any of my echo devices. I use that a lot.

For video, the picture is much less rosy.

I find that Plex generally doesn’t even recognize the firestick or my TCL TV as players.

It will recognize LG 5 smart phone, but can’t seem to actually play anything. It says it will play an episode of x, but never does.

It recognizes my ipad, and plays to that.

I recognize that plex has to interact with a potentially huge universe of possible players, and I assume that’s the problem.

That said, is there any reason to see this issue be more resolved?

Again, thanks.

Before you established the VLAN, did you successfully have alexa play music from plex on your Echo devices. This is the part of plex functionality I’ve had the best luck with. Howver, I find that it only works when I don’t redirect the port for remote access.

Is the Plex app running on the Fire Stick? Alexa cannot open the app so it must already be running.

As mentioned earlier, Alexa is not supported on Smart TVs.

Please provide the log from PMS and the Android app after reproducing this issue.

It did offer stick as a player to choose. Often it doesn’t even offer it as a choice.

This failed to play on the firestick.
