All media disappeared and can't choose folders when creating a new library

Server Version#: 7.1.1-42962
Player Version#: 1.32.8.7639-7000

Hi,

My Plex suddenly stopped working. No media is showing in any of the players. So I decided to upgrade my DSM to the latest and Plex media server as well. The problem still didn’t get fixed

I’ve noticed when I try to create a new Library, I cannot select the folders. I can only choose the shared folder, which is named “Videos” under “Volume 1” and that’s it, I cannot go deeper and select specific folders. I’ve checked the permissions and Plex has the permission to read/write

I tried reaching out to Synology as this could be a permission issue, but they were of no help because my question involved a 3rd party software.

Any tips on how to trouble shoot this?

Much appreciated

You upgraded from DSM 6 → DSM 7 ?

The problem with the “Videos” shared folder has existed since DSM 5.
Synology products claim ownership and often reset any permissions you grant there

Before we go about solving this, Do you still have all your server metadata (Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server) in the Plex share or did it migrate to its new home for DSM 7 in (PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server) ?

Hi. Thanks for your reply.

I haven’t touched nor deleted anything.

Does that answer your question? Please forgive my ignorance, not really a tech savvy

Go look for me in FileStation.

Do you see "Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server?

Go look in the “Plex” shared folder (just above it)

Thank you…

Your server data is still in DSM 6 mode.

We have to ‘migrate it’ (there’s a bunch of steps you need to do for this to happen).

Don’t run away, I’ll go get the How-To and write up some instructions to go with it.

awesome. thank you very much… didn’t expect to get a reply this fast…

At work now, going for a meeting but can’t wait to start fixing this asap.

Thank you again

Here’s the instructions. (a lot of what I’m writing is already spelled out in the FAQ)

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Uninstall the DSM 7 Plex app — choose the DELETE option
    – It will empty the new PlexMediaServer shared folder and make it ready.
    – We are deleting it because it’s rogue. We want the package installer to move all your existing data to DSM 7 as it installs again (it does this by default)
  1. Now, starting with “Scenario 2”, scroll down and you’ll see where you grant Administration (ALL), Read(ALL), and Write(ALL) permission to “This folder, sub-folders, and files” for EVERYTHING in the Plex shared folder (where your existing metadata is)

  2. This will take time to complete – dependent on how much media you have indexed.

  3. It’s of paramount importance that “PlexMediaServer” show as having Full Control of all files in the “Plex” shared folder before we start installing the DSM 7 app again.

  1. Once you’re sure you’ve got all the permissions right, Go ahead and install the DSM 7 Plex app again. “Normal installation”.

  2. It will sit at “Installing” for a while. (about 3 minutes for each 1000 files you have indexed into PMS)

  3. Don’t refresh the page or restart the Syno – it’ll make a mess

  4. Instead, open a new tab to the Syno,

  5. Go to the Plex shared folder.

  6. you’ll find (after about 3 minutes), the file “Migration.log”.

  7. This is where the installation writes all the progress for each step of converting your DSM 6 metadata & configuration to the new DSM 7 version.

  8. When Installation is complete, you will find that “Plex/Library” is gone.

  9. All your metadata will have been moved to the “PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server” structure.

Be patient. Pay attention to the mind numbing details.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions… Just don’t panic

Thanks so much. As I’m doing this remotely, I’m facing issues in manual install. Maybe my upload speed is very low.

Will try to figure it out. Will come back here with results/questions

Much much apprecaited, thank you so much

If Manual Install is timing out – you don’t have enough bandwidth to get to the Syno.
(I find that extremely unusual… DSM is pretty tolerant as long as it’s getting data)

Ok I’m having a problem. I’m sure I’ve downloaded the right version for Synology 1513+

Which version should I download. Intel 32 or 64?

EDIT: ok I chose the 64 bits and it’s installing

Tried the steps but it’s not working. same problem. not sure what am I doing wrong

Question 1 - Did you remember this step ?

  1. FileStation
  2. Highlight the shared folder
  3. Right-Click → Properties
  4. Permission tab
  5. Create (create a new entry for PlexMediaServer)
  6. Click Done to exit the rule definition and return to the original permission page
  7. Confirm PlexMediaServer has permission to the shared folder
  8. “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” (must be checked)
  9. SAVE

Question 2 -

Did you originally create this volume under DSM 4.x or 5.x ?

Hi Thanks again.

COuld be DSM 4 or 5 can’t remember. I’ve deleted everything, including the plex shared folders, and re installed before seeing your reply, and it was still the same result.

I will try you solution as soon as I get the chance

Before you go “Hog Wild” deleting stuff…

The extended ACLs we now use in DSM 6 and DSM 7 weren’t available in DSM 4 & 5.
Additionally, Synology never added them to existing shared folders when DSM 6 was released.

If you create the shared folder now, you get everything defined.

Solution ----

  1. Rename the media folder: e.g MediaMedia-old

  2. Now create a new Media shared folder to take its place ON THE SAME VOLUME

  3. AS YOU CREATE the new Media shared folder,
    – Be certain to add `PlexMediaServer in the permissions list
    – Be certain to add the others user(s) you have granted access to (if you do this)

  4. Complete creating the shared folder.

  5. (now the annoying part) — :frowning:

  6. Move everything from Media-old to the new Media

It’s annoying because of how DSM moves files.

From the SSH command line, it’s an instantaneous move (it’s actually a rename)

Repeat this process however many times is needed for each shared folder.

Thanks for your reply… However. I have deleted everything and still I cannot get Plex to work!

I gave it all the permissions and still…

EDIT: Is there a way to do a clean slate installation? I don’t care about losing anything, the media files are safe (right?)

EDIT2: I’m so desperate I don’t mind giving access to anyone who can help! I don’t have much personal stuff… feel free to browse my family pics lol
