All various artist releases being added under "Ace Ventura"

So this is a weird one, but basically when ever I import a various artist release (with album artist set to “Various Artists”) plex matches it to ace ventura, despite this artist not appearing on the compilation.

Any have a similar issue, it’s not awful as I can manually fix it, but it still is a bit annoying.

Depending on whether you have “Prefer local metatags” activated or not, it can be an issue with embedded meta tags (or their absence) or an issue of the folder organization – or both.
See this thread for a typical example All of my "Various Artists" albums changed Artist name

It is neither, the tags are written by beets.io and accurately list various artists as the album artist, and the actual artists for artist fields.

They are organized into Various Artists/[Year] - [album name]/[tack#] - track.

Further these compilations do not include “ace ventura” and often pre-date their birth.

Do your folder and file names actually contain square brackets or is this only for indicating a place holder?

I’m pretty certain it’s actually one of these.

Here is the a screenshot showing the meta data Nextcloud

Here is the folder path /mnt/taro/Music-Flac/Compilations/The Best of Goa Trance 2 (I guess I forgot beets handled VA releases a bit differently.

Which folder has been added to the Plex library?

the root folder for the music library is /mnt/taro/Music-Flac/

This means that the folder Various Artists is treated as the “Album Artist” folder.

Can you 100% confirm that

  • not a single file inside of that folder has a deviating Album Artist meta tag than “Various Artists”
  • not a single file inside that folder has a missing/empty “Album Artist” meta tag
  • there are no files inside which miss their “track number” meta tag

Yes to all three, as stated I use beets.io to manage my library, and it writes all metadata when importing/copying into that folder.

This wasn’t an issue until about 6 months ago, and finally got annoying enough to post.

Not sure I understand this fully.
Are you saying that the embedded tags are potentially written or changed only after you have copied the file into your Plex library?

I wonder if the cause of this issue has been corrected long ago, and all that’s left to do is to perform “Fix Match” and set the whole Ace Ventura album artist back to Various Artists.

  1. Beets will write the file with metadata to the folder structure, the it’s not modified after being placed there.
  2. Fix Match doesn’t work, I have to manually edit it.
  3. I’ve tried to clean my database &c nothing solves this.

Could you be more specific?

What exactly are you doing,
and hat exactly happens?

It does nothing and keeps it as “Ace Ventura”. The only way I’ve been able to resolve this and edit the album artist field manually to Various Artists.

Here it happened again.

Properly tagged, Album Artist listed as “Various Artists” in it’s metadata.

I think you never mentioned whether you have “prefer local meta tags” activated or not.

I’d also like to see where the affected album is stored in the folder hierarchy.

  1. No I do not have prefer local meta tags active.
  2. /mnt/taro/Music-Flac/Compilations/ is how they’re stored.

Then the album artist which is listed on musicbrainz.org for this album may override your embedded meta tags.

If you enable “prefer local meta tags”, you must make sure that every single track in every single album inside of /Compilations is tagged with the same album artist.

That shouldn’t mater, because I’m the one who wrote the Musicbrainz entry for this album and used it to tag this…

Everything in /Compilations is tagged with album artist = “Various Artists”

When did you do this? It can take quite a while for changes on MB to travel to Plex.
And someone else could have overridden your edits at MB too. (Since I don’t know which actual album this is, I cannot check myself.)

For this case - I did it a few minutes prior to adding to plex (but the mb info is there) but this issue has happened to other releases that I didn’t add.
