Just wanted to start a chat with other users who run anime servers. How d you guys manage it?
I personally create my own nfo files and I use my own local media assets. I’ve started to use translations of episode plots from the actual anime’s website which can be sometimes hard to find. I personally haven’t like imdb, thetvdb, or crunchrolls plots.
I’ve also foud that their websites to have higher quality key visuals for posters and backgrounds. Ideally I would like to have a different background for every season like I do with posters. Now backgrounds I’ve also used key visuals from crunchyroll. They’re pages started using 21:9 backgrounds in i believe 2k and they also look great.
Theme songs I’ve just used the audio from a clean opening and convert it to an mp3 file. I know this isn’t available, but idealy I would like to have a different theme per season. The same way backgrounds can change per season when you open it up.
I personally don’t use the speicals folder for OVAs. OVAs usually get aired at the end of the season so I will add it as episode 13/25, whichever is the end.
Also sometimes for different seasons I still keep the episode numbering the same. Meaning, for like MHA, I’ll start season 2 at episode 14 instead of starting at 1 again. And this wouldn’t affect me with OVAs either as the episode numbers are on two different seasons.
I have considered stepping away from seaons and doing it by cour. I’ve considered this as usually its a new arc, the key visuals have updated, new intro, etc.

Respect for writing your own nfo files, that’s dedication. The part I always see trip people up with anime is numbering, since TheTVDB aired order, absolute numbering and the way the Japanese sites split seasons almost never agree. Do you stick to one ordering for everything, or pick per show? And for the plot translations, do you keep a text file per episode or edit straight into the nfo?

I pick per show. Something like The Quintessential Quintuplets, It has two seasons and I’m ok with starting numbering over again for second season. Both going from 1-12. Each has their own season nfo which I only include title and plot.
A show like My Hero Academia I am greatly considering doing it per cour. It would add a lot more seasons to the series but they have their own artwork and usually own plot as its another 12 episodes usually. I also continue the episode numbers as if it were 1 big season. So I currently own up to season 4 episode 88.
Also shows like Haruhi Suzumiya I have changed the episode order. I forget which one I went with, I think the chronological order on that one. I rarely do this. Only other show was teen titans. Using the prologue episode from season five as the first episode as it felt way off at the end of the series with the brotherhood.
Now for plots, I do have an nfo for each episode. Currently I’m looking for the official anime sites, finding their story section and using google to translate to English. I’m much happier with this. The other sites I mentioned I just don’t like how the plots are random. I’ve had plots that give the whole episode break down to a single sentence. Even worse when a show has both type of plots.
Also from digging into the anime sites I get way better images at times. So im collecting clear logos, 2k backgrounds and posters from them directly. Usually thetvdb was my first choice but it didn’t always have all the posters, backgrounds are limited to usually fan art, and their resolution is minimum.
Oh, and I also try to use the actual episode title for the thumbnail. I don’t like the random image and I see they get barely recognized when we watch. So when I watch through I’ll pause and take a screen shot. I can show later what I mean.
Oh and I don’t know if its known, but you can use different backgrounds per season. Ideally I’d like to collect images for those too to add flavor per season.

@buckkettering150 This is one I just finished working on. Since the poster is off, I’ve considered making a custom one since I got the HD logo and background.

That looks great, the logo and background really make it. Splitting My Hero Academia by cour makes a lot of sense to me since each cour already has its own art and arc, and it’ll look way cleaner than one giant season. The chronological Haruhi order is a fun call too. If the poster’s off I’d go for the custom one, you’ve already got the HD logo and background so you’re most of the way there.

Posters I’m most likely going to make custom ones. I rarely use plex in the living room but just checked out how it would look on roku app in 4k and all the posters were blurry. So I’ll test out if custom posters can give me better images.
