not sure. I run PMS on ubuntu 16.04

~ Is plex working now? Has it worked previously?
~ permissions come to mind

"is plex working now previously." No, not in this fresh install of Ubuntu. Lots of uuid like directories in .grab but nothing shows up in "shows". PMS has maxed out one of the four cores. (according to htop)

So plex is the user and plex has it's own group. I see that /var/lib/plexmediaserver has owner plex and group plex and all below this are also u plex g plex. . So I figured this would be a safe place to dump my tuner output files just as a test. Should be ok as a test and shouldn't have permission problems?

I have had Mythtv running for several years and consider myself an intermediate linux user. So far Plex just gives me lots of spinning red circles.

Please recreate / refresh the log files (in case you've been streaming) such that they now include the info you've referenced.

Then Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs

Attach the ZIP file with your next post

#5

I need your log files. My first suspicion is file permissions.

#6

Ok, yes plex in var/lib should be that owner-group. Try this for a test: Where you put your actual media files make that 777 (ext4) and see if they shows up in the plex media library now.

I use 755 successfully in my media library with me as the owner (not plex).

#7

If you want to be perfect, directories get 0755, files get 0644. Two find commands will handle that for you

#8

ChuckPA: permissions look correct here. I rebooted. Now the server is in an infinite loop: (from Status page):
8:13am Library scan complete: Extra information may still be downloading from the Internet
8:13am Scanning Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases
8:13am Scanning the "TV Shows" section
(repeat)

I think it's time to wipe the HD and start over with a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04,.3 WinTV-quad drivers, and PMS. Is there an official Linux step by step I should follow? For example, is it necessary to make plex a member of my normal user (uid 1000) which I read somewhere was necessary.

I'll follow: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200288586-Installation

It is starting to sound as if I need to make an Official Linux Installation Guide :)

  1. Install Ubuntu.
  2. Do not create user plex during installation
  3. Do not create user plex manually
  4. The installer does everything needed. (plex's home is /var/lib/plexmediaserver not /home/plex)

yeah great :)
