Apple TV 4k (2021) HDR color banding

Same issue here…just bought an apple tv 4k to grant the better picture quality possible, finding this unwatchable result.

I had to switch to Infuse that is able to play perfectly what was junky on plex.
The workaround suggested by @Evil-Disco-Guy doesn’t work with high bitrate content, making it a lot laggy

Really, why the dev team is not answering to this post?

Too be fair not sure its plex thats causing the banding , yesterday i tried emby’s player (which i have emby server also) even their player dont have hdr it tone maps i have the same banding as within plex (so my thinking is this two different apps but use the same mpv player while channels dvr dont and ((infuse dont or their special hack , i dont know really but lets say for this post they dont use mpv at all and dont have any banding just like channels dvr so too me its mpv player that emby and plex use so untill mpv sorts the mpv bits plex and emby will have banding)) well thats my thinking

Come on guys it’s been a year, can we get an update?

then they need to dump MPV and build whatever in house player will play things as well as infuse. Now after a whole year it’s inexcusable for high quality videos to be displayed this poorly.

It’s been 365 days since I posted this issue. There have been near zero updates from official Plex sources on this matter. There have been 48 unique paying Plex Pass members posting about this issue in this thread. It is becoming clear that Plex does not care about this issue nor its supporters who most likely paid for 1+ years of subscription.

What can be done to at least get a response from Plex?

I am coming up on my 1 year Infuse anniversary. $10 is peanuts for peace of mind over the past year. Still, I never imagined I would have to consider extending my membership.

Got the exact same issue on iPhone 13 Pro Max as well. Infuse has no such issues. Kind of ridiculous that this is not getting any tracktion. Just recently bought plex plass and since then ran into multiple issues like this one that are ignored by plex devs.

Probably pointless to mention this here as it seems the Plex team have no interest in this eternal thread, but the exact same issue happens on the Plex app on my FireTV Stick 4K Max on a LG C1.

Horrendous banding in DV 4k especially in bright areas on the FireTV stick - Severance is a standout with all the bright white walls. If I play the same file on the internal LG Plex app it’s fine, but that has a lot of its own issues (can’t play 4K DV in MKV, audio drop outs, laggy WebOS compared to butter smooth FireTV).

Obviously Infuse isn’t an option here, but it’s funny how much money Plex seems to be making Infuse because of this. I actually decided against buying the sale of the lifetime Plex subscription recently just because of this one issue.

Same here for me, weird color banding appears in the background for every movie I playback on my Apple TV 4K, nothing new from the Plex team ?

I think if you’re already invested in atv4k, having Infuse just makes sense vs waiting a year+ for no appreciable progress. As HDR becomes more prominent, the issue will grow bigger so it does need some attention sooner than later (hopefully).

It would be nice to at least get an indication that this issue is being worked on.

Can infuse play movies from a Plex Server ? Because the Apple TV is my only Apple Device and Plex is working great everywhere else so I don’t see any reason to leave it …

yes Infuse can connect directly to your plex server, but ONLY your primary admin account. it does not do managed users.

I also have other issues like Infuse constantly losing the library data and taking forever to refresh. Oh and Infuse also cannot handle multi-part videos with -part1, -part2, etc.

Because of all that I have to switch back and forth, which is a big pain.

Chiming in to say I also experience the colour banding with HEVC+HDR content in tvOS plex app.
No banding with the same files in infuse.

The going to the menu and back does fix it - which suggests it’s a negotiation issue.

Just adding to the chorus. Experiencing the same banding issues on my Apple TV 4k with Samsung “The Frame” TV on any HDR content. Infuse displays correctly. Lifetime pass member and have to say I’m disappointed that this issue has persisted for over a year.

@DaveBinM can you confirm that this is an issue with MPV? If so can your team work with them to resolve it?

Adding my +1 to this issue although, looking at the way things are going, it won’t make much difference.

Sure, £0.79 a month for Infuse to play HDR content isn’t a huge amount, however I pay for Plex Pass and shouldn’t need to pay for an extra app when that functionality should already exist.

hi again everyone. I decided to look into @captaingriss’ suggestion on MPV’s GitHub and found this issue:

“that is most likely the issue mentioned in #7846 (and i mentioned here #8467 (comment)), because there was no 16-bit UNORM for p010 texture format on iOS, i believe. if that’s is still the case there isn’t much we can do about?”

over my head, but it seems to be a fundamental problem with mpv/ffmpeg and iOS. Although that doesn’t explain why you can work around it with @Evil-Disco-Guy’s tip.

edit, also:

" though this image looks like some wrongly mapped format, eg a 10bit output mapped to 8bit or something. it looks similar to this issue #7846. so it’s possible it’s related to hwdec and format mapping. though to be really sure you should have opened a proper issue with the issue template filled out and a log. also maybe @tmm1 knows more by now."

Finally found this thread after months of off-and-on troubleshooting and testing out different formats. As a paying Plex Pass member, and a longtime and vocal fan of the service, it is a real shame to see so little progress on this issue. Sure, as an Apple TV (2021) owner, paying a buck or so a month for Infuse is a serviceable workaround, but it really ought not be necessary. Not to mention the uncertainty: will this movie look OK in my preferred player (Plex), or should I err on the side of caution and just use Infuse right away? If you can’t tell, I’d like to stick with Plex, but it’s just not the simplest solution anymore. Devs, prove me wrong, please!
