Apple TV 4K Siri Remote 2nd Generation Features Not Working

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4523
Player Version#: 7.17
After receiving a new Apple TV Siri remote today, I connected it to my system and noticed a couple of things didn’t seem to be working correctly in Plex. I can’t skip forward or backward by tapping the right and left click wheel as described in the Apple TV User Guide. I also cannot scrub on the full click wheel. It works on about half of the wheel before going the other direction. There is also supposed to be an icon that appears in the timeline when scrubbing to indicate fine tuned scrubbing, that is also not present.
I have updated to the most recent versions of the Apple TV OS and Plex on Apple TV version. The remote does have all of these functions in the Apple TV app. I’m sure there is another app update coming, but if someone has any work around ideas (other than using the iPhone/iPad remote) to skip and scrub easily with the new Siri remote, I’ll take it. Thank you for reading.

Might not be 100% Plex:

Thanks for that update. I guess I only tested in a couple of places. Like I said, it worked in Apple TV (because of course it would it’s their app), and I thought it worked in other locations. Good to know that it’s not specific to Plex. I’ll file and Apple Support ticket too.

I assume the behavior is only for the native video player and must be implemented by the developer if they are not using the native player (the behavior being the jog dial). Here’s hoping Plex adds support as well. From what I can see the Disney+ app does not support it, while Prime Video, Netflix, and HBO Max do. The behavior I am referring to is pausing the video, then resting your finger on the wheel until you see a jog dial. I wish Apple had just implemented it as a wheel all the time so as we could also scroll through lists, and make it that no one needs to code for it, but I guess they only wanted a jog dial for video… Are there plans to add this Plex devs?

UPDATE: This hs been quickly dded in the Plex Beta. Thank you Plex Dev team!

The failure of tapping left/right to skip backwards and forwards consistently is deeply frustrating. Really hope that’s something Plex can fix.

This was also raised a few days ago, with a comment from Elan (CTO)

Thanks! Looks like I wasn’t the only one to raise this. The threads started on the same day! Hopefully Elan and company are able to get this sorted soon. Will keep monitoring.

I hate Apple’s policy of adding new features that are ONLY supported by their native players. Atmos comes to mind as well. Get it together Apple. I wish I could say the Apple TV 4K has the best Plex implementation, but I handily give it to LGs WebOS. I just wish I didn’t need to use it (and it has no jog dial either lol)

UPDATE: I am happy to report that the jog wheel was added quickly in the latest Plex Beta. Thank you so much for implementing this so quickly!

Anyone else having issues with the latest Plex? The skip forward and back works for a while and then stops working. I have to restart Apple TV to get back functionality.

yep, it happens from time to time

Huh, webOS best client? Does it support single layer Dolby Vision, can use the Watch Together feature and pass lossless audio? Your ideal client is different from mine.

Okay I retract my statement LOL. It is just frustrating when Apple adds features ONLY if you are using the native player and makes it incredibly difficult for the devs to get the functionality into their players…

So glad to hear they have something in the works in the latest beta. Hoping it comes out soon!

Actually I have found it to be inconsistent. Sometimes it works sometimes it does not work until after restarting the Apple TV.

Okay. Given that it’s beta, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. Are you on Apple Beta as well, or just using Plex beta? Could be an additional factor.

Just the Plex Beta, not the Apple Beta. 14.6 on the Apple TV

Yeah, after a restart it comes back. And while I have gotten all 4 arrows to generate the jog wheel, the one that points up is much harder. I don’t have the same issues with other fully supported apps (although they sometimes refuse to get any jog wheel until after restart.

My feeling is there are bugs in ivOS 14.6 as it applies to the jog wheel in addition to the new Plex, so I would not hold my breath expecting Plex to release it right away. They are probably trying to work through Apple’s bugs in addition to their own. That being said, the Plex Betas tend to be fairly solid so if you want to try out the features you might as well go the beta route…

I noticed in my latest version (which I have set to auto update, because of how cumbersome Apple TV is at showing you app updates), that the 10 second advance and rewind was working so that’s at least something. Hopefully Apple gets an update out soon to fix some of the issues they’re experiencing.

After seeing some other posts and doing my own testing the jog wheel feature now seems to be working on Plex for AppleTV. Can anyone else confirm? Thanks.

Out of the apps that I have tried since Friday when I got the new Apple TV plex is one that works the best so far
