Are there plans to make the Program Guide more like a TV guide?

Add another +1 for Grid view. Long time Plex user and love the PVR & Live TV. Let’s get live TV on the server, androids and the rest.

Another +1 for a traditional tv guide! Also I would have thought that the Plex Media Player app for Mac/PC would be one of the first apps to support live TV.

Agreed, this “guide” is borderline unusable for its intended purpose. This is a schedule, not a library.

+1 for a traditional tv guide but a switchable view could work also.

+1 on this… plus live viewing through the web browser and other apps ASAP

+100 for a triditional guide,…

However, am not a purest so I don’t think a triditional guide should be the only form of navigation, discovery and scheduling. Plex should do that voodoo that they do so well. A true guide should be additive and not supersede the feel of Plex. To that end, I have to say I like the changes added to PMS 1.7.4. When streaming live TV next to the time shifting options twards the lower right there is now a desplay of what is on next on the channel you are viewing.

When viewing live TV the menu on the upper right opens the Queue and that seems to show even more upcoming shows on the given channel you are viewing.

It’s nice and it deserves some recognition.

So there have been some changes in PleX Media Server 1.7.5.4035.

The Queue as mentioned above is useful but it would be ideal if it were more interactive. So, for example, the ability to select an upcoming show on the given channel and then initiate a recording from the Queue would be great. It would also be great if the Queue had the full 12 to 14 days of guide data for the given channel not just a few hours. Then you could just scroll through for what you want to record on a given channel.

I like that the Guide data in the iOS app seems to have all the channels represented and channel numbers listed at the bottom of the icons along with the guide data. So there is a sense of completeness going from the lowest channel to the highest and everything in between.
The problem though is its only for what is currently on just like the channel list in the iOS app that is invoked during live TV.

It would be great if there was a way to advance through time with the guide data so you can go past what is currently on and also be able to schedule recordings when advancing.

It feels like Plex is moving towards a full guide grid but in a cautious yet unique way. I like it but it still needs work,…

Agreed. It’s not always easy to find shows with the current format.

While a full grid is an important and necessary thing, I would like at least the ability to see a single channel.

Yeah, that is what I’ve been saying.

So for example, when in the guide you can click “Discover” and have a pull down menu with options like “All channels” and “By Channel”. The “By Channel” option can give you all program guide data for that channel for the period of time that the guide data extends to (say 12 to 14 days). You can then switch from channel to channel and receive all the data for each channel respectively.

Being able to initiate scheduled recordings from there would be ideal.

I’d also like to see a keyword search option that stays resident. So for example, lets say there is an upcoming show like “Marvel’s Inhumans” or " Star Trek Discovery". These won’t show up in a guide that only extends 12 or so days. However, if instead of having a search that yields no results it would be great if a zero return search had an option that would auto re-initiate as soon as the guide is updated and schedule a series recording automatically if it gets a hit. If its a movie a single recording being setup would suffice.

Alternatively a notice of when the search gets a hit after a guide update with a yes or no prompt asking if the user wants to auto setup a series recording or one time recording.

That way the user can search once and forget it after that. Instead of the user having to look for specific shows Plex DVR makes the show come looking for the user.

Until grid guide and DRM cable support is implemented, Plex DVR is nothing more than a toy I mess with here and there. I literally laugh out loud when I see posts saying this setup is a Media Center killer… No…

With epg123, Media Center is better than ever and I plan on sticking with it until there ain’t a working Xbox 360 left on planet Earth!

That is an easy argument to make for some. I don’t necessarily disagree given the prowess of Microsoft Media Center which is still more polished and feature complete then any DVR software I have seen so far,…IMO.

Having said that, I never fully subscribed to the idea of DRM and the need for a Media Center Extenders. Its great when it works well but there is still a significant impeding obstacle between the user and the media. So while it is ideal and convenient to be able to record / watch premium DRM channels via cablecard there is still a significant issue with it.

This is why I used Hauppauge HD PVR USB units and Hauppauge Colossus PCIe cards with Microsoft Media Center even though I had cablecard. I would not record anything via cablecard that would be DRM locked down instead opting for an analog HD 1080i / 720p H.264 / AVCHD recording via the Hauppauge products in Media Center,…without the DRM.

So now I can switch to something like Plex DVR if I choose to without having to worry about having a library full of locked down DRM media files.

I would like to see Plex support the Hauppauge line of products moreso then DRM cablecard support.

+1
I would welcome a tradition grid guide as the current guide is hard to navigate and plan recordings.
Having a traditional channel, day, time grid would also help improve the spouse acceptance factor.

Completely agree, the PvR is just a “toy” it can’t replace my main setup until we get a standard grid guide which everyone else in the house is familiar with.

The current view is messy and impossible to browse.

I recently switched my WMC machine over to EPG123 as a guide source instead of ROVI. Since my Plex Server is on the same machine it would be great if it could use the same guide data.

Honestly, Plex is not a “Live TV” replacement offering w/o a guide that sucks.

Can’t even see which channel a show is on.

Are the people designing and trying to sell this even people who watch Live TV?

+1 for Grid view. I’m planning to soon switch from cable + WMC setup to an OTT + OTA setup (many of the OTT services don’t have all of my locals) and my wife won’t care for the lack of a grid. I don’t like it either.

+1 for grid view, please!

+1 for grid

I appreciate Plex DVR is in beta and constantly improving, so these are my thoughts and hopes on it so far (related to grid view).

The existing Browse and Discover views are OK, and actually pretty good, once you get used to them, but my big frustration is that if you have added all the channels your tuner can handle (or that you might ever want to watch), then there are so many shows displayed and so few filter options that it’s useless. The only way I’ve found it usable is to deselect almost all of the channels in the tuner setup, so that only shows from my most frequently watched channels are displayed. That’s not great though because if I somehow discover (through some other way because I can’t now in Plex) that there’s a show I want to record on one of the other channels, I’d have to add it in temporarily in the tuner config.

Basically, Plex needs much better filtering options, eg to restrict it to a number of channels (rather than just one, which is possible in only some of the views).

Secondly, personally, I am primarily interested in shows that are on prime time, eg 8pm to 10pm weekdays. There is one view that shows a list similar to this, but it’s not great. Perhaps we could have a filter to restrict the views to a time range.

Thirdly, the channel number is displayed in too few places. I appreciate the focus is on the content not the channel, but I don’t think we’re (I’m) quite ready for that yet. It’s like Apple deciding that we don’t need a headphone port on our iphones anymore.

In a nutshell, a grid view let’s us do all the things I just described and more, so please can we have a grid view!
