When trying to access the Plex server on my new ASUSTOR AS-202TE (1,2ghz Intel Atom/1GB RAM) from a remote network (or over LTE/4G), the NAS is utilizing the CPU almost 100% and playback is impossible. Playback starts and stops every 10 seconds.
With the same file and settings on the server/NAS and iPhone/iPad, but connecting through my local network, the playback is very good and the NAS CPU is working around 25%. (edit)
(I was using a 1080p file for testing.)
Why is the CPU more utilized from a remote network/4G, compared to my local network?
Is it possible to get a fluent playback through remote access on the AS-202TE do you think? (with 720p and 1080p files)
Hope somebody will give me a good answer, and maybe a good trick to make it work.
Edit: A 720p file is playing fine with remote access (LTE on an iPad Air). Using about 25% of the ASUSTOR CPU when streaming.
I also run a Asustor 202TE and did experience the same. But in my case I was able to make it work.
When you go into Settings --> Plex/Web --> Player you can change the streaming quality for both local and remote streaming. If it is set lower than the bitrate of your video, Plex will try to transcode the file to stream it with a smaller bitrate. Unfortunately transcoding is not possible on the Asustor 202TE because the hardware is just not powerful enough.
Because of that, I just set the streaming quality on max. Like that Plex will never try to transcode. Obviously you need a big enough upstream to be able to stream 1080p videos remotely.
With these settings I am able to stream a 1080p video without the cpu going over 25%
I don't really know if it also works on an iPad, since I don't have one, but I imagine it will.

Hello,
I have the Asustor AS-302T (Intel® ATOM™ 1.6GHz Dual-Core Processor, 1GB RAM, and i also have the problem when Plex will do a transcode then the CPU will be on 95-100%.
Then i also tried to configure it, that the videos should be playbacked in full quality, that plex does not have to transcode anything.
But this does also not work, because the CPU is also running very high, not 95-100% but only 3-5% less.
So i cant belive that your CPU is only running up to 25%, because your Asustor AS-202T has a lower CPU then my (Intel® ATOM™ 1.2GHz Dual-Core Processor, 1GB RAM)
Hi guys, sorry to jump in, I posted above about how PMS runs on a 204-te and as you guys have the 202-te, which looks like the same spec, Im hoping you could let me know how its runs and what its like etc? Im switching from usinga windows laptop to hopefully an asustor nas as my server.
Apologies again for jumping on someone elses thread, this forum is so quiet and Im really wanting to get this thing ordered and start trying it out :)

hello irwit,
i´m using the AS-302T which is better then the AS-202T or AS-204T, and i dont use PLEX because of bad performance while streaming with an client (for example, Andorid phone, ipad, iphone or laptop)
so therefore PLEX is useless for me.
Just for information, i tried it with 720p or 1080p mkv files, if you have videos with lower video quality, then you have a better choice
Thanks Slekk for the info. Im guessing that is because you are trying to get the NAS drive to transcode which I do understand it would not hav ethe horsepower to perform. Sorry to hear it cannot do what you want. To be honest though I will be direct playing all my movies so I dont think I will have the same issue.
Issues Im looking for, if any, would be similar to the difference between how the player works on windows or on the samsung TV. Supposedly they should be the same but the samsung app is slow and there are some annoying bugs like it defualts to always play subtitles on everything, you cannot log into your plex account and auto connect to your server, you have to join plex player without your login and just manual autoconnect so you cannot view shared servers, things like that.
I’m thinking about buying this drive second hand for a plex server. You guys have probably been using it for a while…Would you recommend it? Or is throttling at 95% still happening?
