Auto Levelling of Audio for Commercials

Commercials are 3X the volume of my program! Can’t Plex ensure consistent audio levels? It’s torture enough to watch 4 Thermador commercials in a row, let alone have a sonic assault on my hearing when commercials begin to play.

You can use the “mute” button or you can just use content that belongs to you and you will not have to endure the commercials.

This, or something much like it, has been asked for for at least since Plex has existed but Plex doesn’t do what Plex does not want to do so do not expect any action on this request any more than there has been on the last 30 or so others that have happened over the years.

As far as I am aware we can’t auto level something we have not pre-analyzed the audio for. We don’t know which commercial will play when. It is decided in milliseconds before it is served from partner ad site to the player

Then send the current volume level to the partner site with the request to stream the Ad and adjust the audio volume of the Ad. I remember when The Brick did the same thing with their TV ads. Lots of complaints eventually ended that practice. I am sure there is a technical solution and if Plex is unwilling to come up with one, then perhaps we should start contacting their Advertisers to complain. I’m sure Thermador and others care about the impression made on potential customers by the volume and frequency of their ads.

I believe you know that this is on purpose, but as BigWheel said, they can’t analyze that content. Maybe if they open up to you who’s their provider, here’s what you can do:

But content on the internet is not covered by that at all. It only applies to broadcast TV stations.

Q: Do these rules also apply to radio commercials or commercials on the Internet?**
A: No, the CALM Act only applies to commercials aired on television.

So it will do no good to complain or to try to get the FCC involved.

From a UK perspective:

The BCAP code states: ‘Advertisements must not be excessively noisy or strident. The maximum subjective loudness of advertisements must be consistent and in line with the maximum loudness of programmes and junction material.’

In other words, no single ad should be noticeably louder than others screened at the same time and all the ads should reflect the sound levels of the programmes they accompany

BCAP = Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice
ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) have the same rules

Repeated over the web, but quote taken from page: Noisy TV adverts - are they legal? | This is Money

I live in Canada where the CRTC is the regulatory body. According to this sound level regulation also applies to IPTV providers.

There’s already an existing suggestion addressing this from last September.
I suggest you comment/vote in this thread instead.
