Better support for albums and tracks with multiple artists

I add my voice to those who would looove to have multiple artists support. With some genres (jazz, edm), I don’t see how it is possible to have an ordered library without this feature!

I fully agree. Multiple Artists, multiple Genres and Starts rated should all be at Album’s track level. And filters should help us to managed them in smart list.

In reading up on this on both the Internet and Plex forums, this issue has been complained about for years. What I want in a media player is to be able to look at the screen and immediately know two things…what the song title is and who is performing. I NEVER want to see “Various Artists” in place of who is performing.

Given the length of time this issue has been kicked around, I doubt that anyone at Plex intends to actually fix the problem. As an alternative to a real fix, could we at least get the fields for artist and album in the track listing changed to lockable fields so we can manually change these and have them remain changed?

yes, this is super annoying, I keep missing good albums because they’re not lumped in with the artist I expect. Multi-artist albums should appear in both artists sections.

Yes, please. Artist page is cluttered with “artist X & artist Y”.

Is plex working on this? or is it still remains as a request?

I think this is not a very high priority feature request. Maybe a few mock ups would help people understand and then support this request more, it’s a bit diffuse right now.

I think that a simple option to specify which tag gets used for album vs artist view would alleviate most of the problem. If I could tell Plex to use “album artist” for album view, and “track artist” for artist view, It would greatly clean up the way my music is presented.

As an example, my album artist could be “80’s Pop Hits”, and my track artists, “Devo, Thomas Dolby, Bangles, etc.”

When in Album View, I’d see one entry for “80’s Pop Hits”, but when viewing a particular artist in Artist View, their related tracks on compilations would be present.

This is a really important request. The music community I’m involved in releases a lot of multi-artist collaboration albums. It’s annoying that I can’t filter/search by track artist.

i’d have much use for that feature as well! would be cool if you could also enable this multiple artist syntax for video libraries. that could improve tagging of home videos, live concerts or even actors in movies.

Yes because managing things like soundtracks or colab albums is an absolute chore. I have CDs that have multiple mixes and group projects and they end up scattered all throughout my collection. The only way to fix this is to find the album through sort by album or to rename the artist under a single artist which in my opinion defeats the purpose of displaying artist information. This needs to be reworked by allowing albums to be categorized under the dominant artist on the album in search by artist view instead of categorizing each song individually. Or at least after pressing play like you normally would on an album it could queue up the entire album that song came from instead of the individual song or groups of songs. One problem I have is when I play an album it will be missing songs. I didnt discover that the songs had a slightly different artist naming and were dropped by that album queue completely. Other I noticed were shorter than I remembered and when I searched I found that PLEX did not queue up these songs. This is one reason I hate playing my media through a service like this. All my music is nice and neat in directories on my hard drive. The service that is supposed to make it more neat is ironically scattering my collection and making it far harder to find content.

I still don’t get why something this important isn’t implemented yet… Add it!

Same here… Please, work on this important feature: a cooperative album should figure in both artist’s folders!

Competition such as Emby nails ID3 implementation. Plex has been stuck with no standardized implementation forever…

Agreed. I’ve been trying Emby out recently, and it handles multiple artists exactly as we’ve been asking for in Plex.

Adding more flexibility to the “Custom Filter” by adding more Track filter choices could be an answer.

Example of new filter names that should be added (that can be red from the “ID3 metadata container” stored inside each music file).

Track Artist/Performer (implemented like “Track Title”)
Filter: is, is not, contains, does not contain

Track Composer (implemented like “Track Title”)
Filter: is, is not, contains, does not contain

Track Genre (implemented like “Track Title”)
Filter: is, is not, contains, does not contain

That way, you can find any music track from any albums where an artist is named. The same way, you can also find any “Jazz” music track form any album, same it the “Album Genre” is “Soundtrack”, or you can find all music form “Beethoven” (composer) form all music album.

+1 for multiple album artists

+1 This is a must-have feature. There are tens of thousands of albums with more than a single artist. Please prioritize this request.
