This (and most other) problems with music library tagging has long been solved by Slimserver (aka Squeeze Server and now Logitech Music Server). That platform is open source. Consult it.
Tag delimiters can be defined by the customer on that platform, so it can support more than the ID3 spec. Most other software (like iTunes) doesn’t support this feature unfortunately.
Likewise, this type of separation allows multiple genres.
It seems we all have different ideas of how files are supposed to be tagged, but to summarize: I am fairly sure what we all want is to have Plex recognize a separator in any field (like “;” or “/”) and then treat whatever’s in the field as separate items.
Personally I would tag, as an example: “Dr. Dre - I Need A Doctor featuring Eminem, Skylar Grey” like this:
Title: I Need a Doctor
Album: Detox
Artist: Dr. Dre ft. Eminem and Skylar Grey
Album Artist: Dr. Dre; Eminem; Skylar Grey
I would expect the three album artists to appear as separate items, but currently it just shows up as “Dr. Dre / Eminem / Skylar Grey” (ie. a single artist).
Three separate artists should be seen and the album “Detox” should appear when browsing either. This brings the question if all the tracks of the album should be seen when browsing, in the example, Eminem or Skylar Grey, but that’s a different issue.
I just went through the hassle of tagging my entire music library (10.000+ files) like this and while it’s a joy browsing the library in Mediamonkey, it’s literally impossible to get anything meaningful out of Plex now.
I have a lot of classical music and EDM in my library, and making this - it appears to me - simple change would solve the issue for both types of music.
Continuing from the example above:
If the track was taken from a compilation, I would add “Various Artists” to the Album Artist in order to be able to browse the complete album.
Title: I Need a Doctor
Album: Now Music 8008
Artist: Dr. Dre ft. Eminem and Skylar Grey
Album Artist: Dr. Dre; Eminem; Skylar Grey; Various Artists
This is a deal-breaker for me. I’ve spent weeks creating consistency in my tags and putting delimiters in fields to create MY ideal browsing experience in MediaMonkey. It offers a great deal of flexibility for handling multi-artist tracks, multi-artist albums, etc. Plex, not so much. I am a bit baffled that such a simple, yet powerful, feature does not exist in Plex. I understand that many folks have differing concepts for how such functionality should work… and that is precisely why this is functionality crying out for customization via a series of preference settings affecting how the data is parsed and presented.
Unfortunately, my disappointment is severe enough to take my library to another platform. My only regret is purchasing premium for a full year.
I add my vote for this. The way that plex music supports tags is beautiful and should exist for artists. The UI could easily be updated to handle artists like it handles genres (which is a dream come true btw, thanks for that). Please update this in a new release it would be much appreciated!
Given how well they use multiple tags in movies for writers/genre/etc, I’m surprised this isn’t a thing for music artists.
I want to be able to add soloists to various jazz tracks. While you can add one artist, and the track shows up in a search for that artist, it does not even show up on the artist page.
Side note. I’ve been hoping for a way to add deeper info, and want to view them on various clients. Like I want to add personal of a band. I did figure you can use the album review for this. However, hitting return offers too much spacing.
Bump. I mostly listen to indie pop, garage, and pre-war folk/blues where artist collaboration is on the whole less critical than with jazz, but it’s still a shame to be forced to create separate multi-artist entries for collaborative works rather than displaying the album under each artist when using the artist view. I tend to survive by tagging these albums under the artist I prefer or the primary contributor if there is one, although I may just have to resort to duplicating the album under each artist with separate tag sets. Incredibly frustrating, even for someone who doesn’t deal with this on a daily basis.
Two years later you still have hope Plex will fix that issue ? I have lost hope now and thinking seriously to move away music from Plex but it’s pain in ass to have to use two different softwares for music and video files Looks like there are more interested to add bling bling feature such as News than make existing ones working as it should !

I’d be willing to switch, but am not aware of a Plex alternative that handles the tags properly. Kodi does, but I need the “cloud”.
Do you know of an alternative? Does Emby do it right?

Emby is too cumbersome for that I was thinking to go back at Slimserver that I used during years in past but not sure if project is still alive since Logitech more or less killed it !
Because they don’t give it a **** about it since ages more focused on useless News features or DVR…
I know, its just disappointing and I wanted to bump this thread… I also really like how Emby uses the extra artwork like, Logo’s and Kodi can use the disc images…
With their new blog post today on how “awesome” they are for music and how much “work” they are doing on improving it, I made a post asking why they won’t even discuss such a basic feature. Rather than reply and discuss this missing feature, they deleted my post. I guess they just want to keep pretending that they’re perfect rather than fix things.
+1
As a long-time Kodi user I was shocked to find out that Plex does not offer this basic functionality. It really is a shame. I already put aside the money for a life pass but seeing this poor a level of support I guess I will cancel Plex pass. Any suggestions for alternatives?

I’m not really surprised ! I already got a talk with some Plex ninjas here in forum and guy stopped answering as soon as I started to talk about that serious problem !! I don’t understand Plex on this or they become like all major IT companies more interested in nice PR for public than getting things to work correctly and as it should be :s
Since all our votes got lost in the changeover to Discourse forums, I took the opportunity to revamp one of my feature requests to ask for a more thorough implementation of all the tags we’ve been asking for, including multiple artists.
I’d like to invite everyone who has supported this idea to look it over and add your votes, if you agree, to that thread, in order to consolidate all our votes for ID3 tags in one place.
I would think with Tidal integration, Plex Dev should have more incentive to get this feature in. This is really a must have for any decent music collection. Otherwise Music is just a secondary citizen in Plex.
