Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.81.1 (web player)
When using the Plex web app at https://app.plex.tv/desktop in the “Brave” browser (http://brave.com) on my Windows PCs (10 Enterprise, and Server 08R2), Plex was not working properly.
I first noticed that I can’t edit the metadata on the show I just added. I tried editing other shows and movies, and I can’t edit them either. I see the error “Your changes could not be saved.” I can’t edit the names for episodes, series, or movies.
Next, I tried to empty the trash, but I can’t do that either. When I try to do that, I get the error " There was a problem emptying the trash."
The same happens when I try to clean bundles: " There was a problem removing unused bundles."
Finally, I noticed that when I go to the General Settings for my media server, it says " Version 1.14.1.5488 Something went wrong. Please install manually." At home on the Plex Server, it said my server was up to date, and today it shows this error message but says I’m on the latest version (the same version I get when I click that “Please install manually” link).
After further investigation, it appears that it was the Brave browser causing this issues. Brave blocks trackers and third-party cookies. It was the latter that was causing an issue.
To resolve this, click on the Brave shield to the right of the address bar. Then change “3rd-party cookies blocked” to “All cookies allowed.” This will only apply to the current site, so you don’t have to worry about suddenly allowing all cookies from other websites you browse.
I’m now at home, on my plex media server (localhost), and it’s working fine here. Here, when I run http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html I am using version 3.77.4 of the web player, and it’s working great.
To test, from this same computer where the media server is, I went to the online web client at https://app.plex.tv/desktop which is version 3.81.1 and the problems I previously described persist. So, this is either something with the 3.81.1 version of the web player, or with being outside of my network.
All I know is that 2 weeks ago, when I used the remote web player (app.plex.tv), it worked fine. Nothing else, except upgrading my plex server, and installing windows updates has changed since then.
No wait… one more thing has changed since then. I switched from the Chrome browser to the Brave browser.
I just tested with Chrome, and I can use app.plex.tv/desktop a-ok with Chrome. So this must be some combination of web-app version 3.81.1 and the Brave browser (which runs on top of Chromium).
Interesting that 3.77.4 works fine though!
Brave (bugs reproduce): Version 0.58.18 Chromium: 71.0.3578.98 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Chrome (bugs do not repro): Version 71.0.3578.98 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Back at work today. I just loaded https://app.plex.tv/desktop into my Brave browser, and then I turned off the “Brave shield” which blocks ads and trackers, and viola! Plex works like a charm.
With further investigation, it actually appears to be the setting “third party cookies blocked” that is causing the issue. When I change it to “all cookies allowed,” then things start working fine again.
WOW. Thank you for this! I’ve been fighting with Plex for days and couldn’t figure out the issue. I’m still having Remote Access issues, but now I can at least try to work them out without errors.
