[BUG] Lots of Android TV player bugs and issues

  1. [BUG] New player doesn’t have any screen saver (like it has on LG WebOS) and while watching TV shows and episode ends, it gets stuck on the next episode screen (where recently watched and next episodes are displayed). And when it does, it even prevents TVs screensaver from turning on. So player is completely unusable for TV shows on OLED TV on late evening when you can fall asleep. I don’t want to buy new TV every few months due to burn-in.

  2. [BUG] It won’t mark whole show as unplayed. It asks, it says it’s done, but actually you still have to go to your server and mark there.

  3. [UX ISSUES] And I won’t even expand on how terrible whole navigation UX is:

  • On Deck lags to update (eg. go to episode, mark as played, go back home and you still see that episode for a few seconds);
  • On Deck selected cards size isn’t noticeable at all if there’s only one card in a row. Border is much more better - you can see at once what you have selected;
  • If you start watching episode from season page till the titles start and press Back, you end up again on season page with same episode selected you just watched and you have go up few times and then right to select next episode even if previous is already marked as watched;
  • Fast Forwarding a movie 3 hours long is a PITA. I used to press up arrow on a PC and 10 minutes passed, but now it’s only 30 seconds;

List continues, but these are the main issues for now.

Am I the only one experiencing such issues?
After the latest update few days ago it got even worse:

  • Now not only episode end screen prevents TV from entering screen saver, but movie end screen too. So Plex on OLED TVs is useless at late evenings;
  • Now there’s no way to get to the search if you’re on any other screen, but “On Deck” (Search button is unreachable if you’re on TV Shows or Movies for eg.)

Noticed one more thing. If you run server update from the player, player then needs to be force stopped. Otherwise server won’t recognize it as on same network and will start transcoding everything while watching.

The more I use the player, the more I’m amazed of how many bugs it has…

Another to the list - changing subtitle layout settings directly from playback screen does completely nothing. You still have to go to main app settings and change it there.

I am right there with ya. I got the nvidia shield tv for the sole purpose of playing TrueHD + Atmos but their are SO many issues with the plex client on android-tv that I have a Roku box also connected that I use at night.

So apparently neither TV Show nor season can be marked neither as played nor unplayed. You have to go through each episode of a 10 season show if you wish to change the play status. Of course you could connect to the server and do it, but what’s the point of the button in the player app then?

FFS, it’s a paid service and they don’t even have a bug tracker (not even mentioning any kind of support)

I have sony android tv and xiaomi mi box s 4k , both devices have same problem, plex server is not working, plex app it is closing it self and writes can not find server. I have apple tv and i pad pro app works well but android devices have problem.

Yes it is, if you want to use all features. Player is a part of all features.

Free or not, a service should work. Otherwise, you may as well not have the service at all. That being said, I pay for the Plex Pass, so it’s a paid service for me and I’d like it to work. I’ve been having the same issue as OP regarding the playback, and I’ve seen others mention it too with no response from Plex or even an acknowledgment that the issue exists. I can’t even turn on the “old player” because if I do, not a single video file will actually play without crashing Plex completely. Every time an episode of a show ends, it restarts the same episode with no sound or video. It’s just ridiculous. If it’s a user error or some setting we need to change or contact our ISP about, fine, but just communicate that to us.

And that’s not just for played or unplayed. If you’re in a library and server finds new items, they don’t appear (even if they do on web UI). You have to navigate elsewhere and go back. And you’re lucky if it works on first attempt to do so.

Another issue…

When episode is almost over and credits start, go [Back]-[Back]-[Back] to Plex Home screen and turn off TV. The hook is triggered that the next episode was just watched even if you never started to play it…

Never happens on Windows Plex player

Same happens on my Shield (2017) and my Firestick 4K.

Never used to be an issue…the player has gone severely downhill over the past 6 months…

I can’t even watch most videos on my Sony Android TV anymore. Green tearing artefacts… It used to work just fine.
The Android TV player really needs some attention and love in my opinion.

No wonder hook is triggered for the next episode even if it never was started to play. I just finished one, turned off TV and still on server dashboard I see it shows the next episode is being played. I already almost forgot I just watched TV and half of the next episode is already done :smiley: Wonder where it plays. It says it’s on TV, but TV is off.

When you start a playback, for 5 seconds looks like nothing is happening, but then you see it starts playing from second 6. But not only there’s no sound at all, it’s like watching 15 fps video :smiley: Yesterday it at least played videos, today - player, that doesn’t play :smiley:

Last version of Plex player for Android TV is broken. It thinks that direct play is disabled (error) on H264/MKV files so tries to transcode every content. Please try another player on Windows or mobile, or playing an old file (MPG-AVI).

Tried like 5 files already. All same. I don’t have so much patience. Will try to find an alternative server and player over the weekend.
