BUG report - subtitles

Server Version: 4.32. 2
Plex for Samsung: 4.25.2
Tizen: 3.0

Issus playing mkv with a large amount of srt subtitles. For example I’m trying to play an mkv now with 40 subtitles, everytime some speaks the video is stuttering like mad.

I don’t have subtitles displayed when watching.

The same mkv plays fine on my Panasonic TV with plex.

If I reduce the amount of subtitles to 10 it plays fine, so there’s definitely an issue regarding the amount.

What do you mean with “40 subtitles”?

  1. 40 different subtitle tracks in different languages (but only one of them can be activated at one time)
  2. 40 words in one line
  3. 40 characters in one line

?

I have the same problem.

He means 40 different subtitles tracks in different languages. Subtitles enabled (one track activated at one time obviously) or even subtitles disabled, problem remains.

Sample file are here (100 MB file, episode isn’t complete for obvious reason):

The exact same file (same video/audio tech specs) with a lower amount of subtitles is working fine, subtitles enabled or disabled. So, obviously, problem is number of embedded subtitles.

40 different subtitles tracks in different languages.

Even with subtitles disabled the problem remains.

How does it behave if you put the file onto an USB stick and plug it directly into the TV?

When you play the file in Plex, does the Dashboard report the playback as being ‘Direct Play’ or ‘Direct Stream’?

Same issue.

I tried to see the limit and seems like it’s not a subtitle limitation, but a number of tracks on files.

I tested and with 30 subtitles tracks, is working. But with 31, it’s not.
I tested with 29 subtitles tracks + 2 audio tracks (to verify if it’s was a track limitation or subtitle tracks limitation) and it’s working. But it’s not with 30 subtitles tracks + 2 audio tracks.

So, I think Samsung has a limitation with 32 different tracks on files (1 video + 1 audio + 30 subs, or 1 video + 2 audio + 29 subs, or 1 video + 5 audio + 26 subs, etc …)
Even used or not (because the issue remains if subs are off), the fact of having so much different tracks on file causes stuttering.

Dashboard reports “Direct Play”.

Did you have time to test how one of the problematic files behaved wehn played with the generic player, directly from an attached hard drive or memory stick?
This could confirm or debunk the theory that it is an issue of the device, rather than Plex.

Tests from my previous post were realized from the generic player from memory stick. Not via Plex. Exactly same behaviour via Plex, I tested few sec ago.

This is why I was talking about Samsung’ limitation.

Thank you! This clears things up a bit.

I see 2 potential workarounds (because I think Samsung can’t be bothered to debug their player for this use case):

With external SRT, issue remains if files are more than 32 tracks.

Yeah, I think the workaround is remove subtitles from MKV. At least, now we know that the problem isn’t from PLEX.

One more thing, when subtitles are burned on video, it’s working, even with 32 tracks. Probably because PLEX is playing the transcoded file, not the original one.

Yes, precisely.

Thanks for your help guys. I will need to find out how to report this to Samsung.

Good luck with that :joy: :joy:

It will be the last thing I purchase from Samsung if that’s the case.

Could I get a sample of the video with the 31+ tracks? I’ve reached out to Samsung and they got back to me asking for a sample,. but they said they do have a limitation on the number of tracks.

I posted a sample few weeks ago : https://easyupload.io/kcayfl

If you need another one, smaller or something else, I can make another one.
