Cannot select original quality when streaming over WAN

I am running PMS 1.10.1.4602 on MacOS 10.13.2
When playing video through the web app over WAN, I can only select the lowest possible quality options.

My android device, connected to the same wifi network, connecting to the same Plex server, is capable of playing original quality video with no issues.

Why is this the case, and how can I fix it? I have combed the settings looking for a solution and found none. I posted this same query on the forums a month or two ago and received no response. Has anyone else experienced/ solved this?

Over WAN = playing back via remote access. Do you mean that a web browser on your local network has this issue?

No, the media server is remote in both cases. If I connect my android device to the same remote network as my laptop, I get different quality options.

This sounds like Wifi congestion, if possible try a different band to your Android device.

This is not an issue of wifi congestion. My connection to the server is fast enough from both devices, but the Plex Web Player is not presenting me with the correct quality options.

Upload speed from remote server

This issue persists across networks. It happens when I am connected to anything other than the server’s LAN.
There has to be some sort of switch that I can flip to make these options show up. Even if I am connected to a slow network on the android device I can at least SELECT original quality and attempt to stream it. I am not even getting that option on the web player.

Upload speed from remote server is not the same as what is available to your LAN Clients. Is your Macbook connected via Ethernet to modem router or wireless?

I have already shown that my MacBook has P L E A N T Y of bandwidth. The required bandwidth to stream that particular video is 1.1, my server has an upload speed of 10, my client has a download speed of 74 !

Can we please get off the subject of wifi congestion now and talk about why else it could be doing this?

What happens if you use the plex.tv web client (plex.tv -> launch)?

Also, what are your quality settings in the web app? Settings -> Web -> Quality

Screen shot WEB Quality settings.

Using the plex.tv > launch method is my usual method for getting to the player. I wasn’t aware that there was any other way if you aren’t on the same LAN as the server.

Here’s a screenshot of my plex web quality settings. Playing around with these doesn’t seem to change the situation at all.

So is this thread just dead now? I’d still like to get to the bottom of this if at all possible.

It may be worth noting that my server thinks it isn’t accessible remotely. I’m sitting here right now, on a a remote connection, watching a movie and looking at the server settings which say:

Could this be the cause of the problem? As far as I know there aren’t many other avenues to explore. I just reinstalled the server fresh (deleted all library files) and nothing much changed.

I’m experiencing the same problems right now, only getting the following options while outside my home network.
Plex
I’ve got plenty of upload speed for my server and good download speed on the network I’m trying to stream from. Both are 100mbps up and down. Did you manage to fix the issue?

I have the same problem on Macbook but only in the Chrome browser over WAN connection.
If I am on LAN or VPN I can choose original quality.

In Safari or Firefox I can choose original quality both over LAN and WAN connections

Anyone have thoughts?
