CBS channel not working on plex

#1

I have been watching several shows on plex for a long time and since yesterday CBS no longer works or has hickups. I recently upgraded to PMS 1.10.1.4602 on Windows 10. My Windows 7 version has the same issue. Other channels work. I followed the guidelines on how to get a channel to work and what to check for. Regional setting is set for US. I reside in the US and am not using a VPN.

The channel listings are available but playing content I simply get an empty screen and it just seems to be spinning without retrieving any content, there is no progress indicator, none so it is also not a transcoder issue. Can somebody pls assist?

Pls see attached debug file. There is no error notification there.

I’m also on PMS 1.10.1.4602 (but on Mac). CBS works fine from here.

Other log files that might show errors are com.plexapp.system.log (for errors in the URL Service code) or Plex Media Server.log (for transcode errors).

Thank you for responding Sander1.

This seems to be important section from the media server log:

This is also the first error in the sequence in any log. The other logs don’t have an error notification, only debug. After this the thread and transcoder dies.

In my case it says directplay is disabled. Is there a setting that I need to change?

Thanks for the log! I see the exact same invalid ratingKey error in mine, even though video playback works for me :-?

CBS videos can’t be direct played because they’re in RTMP format, so the message about transcoding is correct.

Edit: Just checked some other channels that require transcoding and they also produce the same invalid ratingKey error in the log file, but playback works fine…

Edit 2: I also checked the CBS channel on Windows 10 (PMS 1.10.1.4602) and there the channel also works fine.

Thanks Sander1. The next error is this:
Jan 06, 2018 15:10:47.913 [16364] ERROR - [Transcoder] Decoder (codec h264) not found for input stream #0:0
If CBS needs transcoding than this should explain an issue. Just don’t know how to fix it.

I Googled the error message and did find some other posts, but not a solution :frowning: It looks to be a Plex Media Server or Transcoder (ffmpeg) error. At least it is not a channel error.

I’ve experienced the same problem with CBS, but my logs have another error between the “invalid ratingKey” and the “decoder not found” that might help point to the issue:

ERROR - [Transcoder] RTMP_HashSWF: swfurl http://www.cbs.com/thunder/player/1_0/chromeless/1_5_1/CAN.swf not found

Same as @rjmulder , I am in US, not using VPN, and have latest version of PMS on Win10. I can play the Big Bang Theory video in browser from cbs.com no problem. I did capture page source from that browser window and saw this:

“playerPath”:"//can.cbs.com/thunder/player/chrome/cbscom/prod/vod/canplayer.swf"

To an ubernoob like me this seems to suggest some change at CBS? Eager to learn more from the PMS wise and venerable.

Thanks

@qdev That’s some interesting information, thank you! I’ve updated the URL Service code and pushed out and updated Services.bundle (Plex Media server will download the update automatically).

#10

Thanks @sander1. Got the updated Service code, verified updated in AppData, restarted host machine and PMS, and while the swfplayer “not found” error is gone, still not playing CBS content for me.

No further insight at the moment, will update if I find something or becomes workee.

Log attached.

Update: I now get a shaka1001 error playing Bull:
Playback Error
An error occurred trying to play “Grey Areas”.
shaka1001 (Network)

Same for a big bang episode.

“shaka” errors are thrown by the web player and usually have nothing to do with the channel itself. For good comparison please try the channel in a different Plex client (Plex Media Player for example) and see if it errors too.

The answer is yes for one media server. I have a second one setup on win7 but the server is too slow, old beast what can I say. Anyway, on one server when trying for a cbs show I only get a spinning circle, and no progress indicator. On the other server I get Shaka1001 error but only for CBS channel. Bit annoying, other channels I can watch on-demand in other ways, CBS is the only one where I need plex…
