# Connect server with different local ip

Hi guys,
My media server is on 192.168.5.1. My TV is on 192.168.6.2. I try to use TV to connect media server. Anyone could give me some idea?

This is strange. x.x.5.1 should normally be the gateway (router) of the xx.5.x network. Gateways are not **REQUIRED** to be that according to network standards, but it’s very odd to have the network gateway be anything other than the first number. That’s besides the point though.
Client/server connections _should_ work automatically, but you should make sure your routers have the appropriate routing information to allow each network to talk to each other on their own.
If you are using standard home routers, one of the IP address sections might be a “guest” type network, which intentionally isolates traffic from other subnets, usually one of the wifi networks. home routers that are isolated guest networks might not allow configuration to allow cross-network talk though.
**Long story short:** I’ve given you some advice, but without knowing a lot more information about your network, we might not be able to help you more.

I don’t think that OP is describing an actual error.
It is very much normal and expected that your TV and the Plex server have different IP addresses.
Key is to
- claim the server (i.e. connect it to your plex.tv user account)
- sign into the same user account on the Plex app running on the TV (your TV _does_ have a Plex app, right?)

Is that a typo or are they on different subnets? 5.1 vs 6.2.

I assumed they had no typo, and provided some help regarding networking. If the IPs are not a typo, then it’s either an isolated guest network for the client, or just a failure in routing between two subnets.
