I’m running into the same issue. Updated to 1.20.2.3402 and every time I click on any live TV channel, i’m met with “Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna”. I know the antenna is fine because the other TV’s are working and I know the tuner (WinTV-dualHD) is fine because it’s picking up the channels it should. Only reason I bought the Plex Pass was for this very feature, which now doesn’t work
Hi @Saw_Hawthorne and @Narf57 , I tested 1.20.2.3402 on Ubuntu Linux 20LTS, and I’m able to tune to channels on my tuner.
Would you guys be able to compress and post your Plex Media Server logs to this thread, so I can take a look and see what the server is reporting?
Thanks!

I’m getting the same error. I set up Plex yesterday for the first time using a Hauppauge XBox One Tuner. It worked great yesterday and this morning. Great signal strength and no issues. Today, a recording didn’t start. Tuning to any channel I get “Playback Error Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna.” The tuner works fine with WinTV. Nothing changed between yesterday and this morning (when it worked) and later today (to my knowledge). I’ve tried removing and adding the Tuner in Plex. If finds the tuner, finds the channels, loads the guide, but same error.

This continually shows in the console

Same issue here. I wanted to make sure it was not my setup so I built a new plex server and I still get the same issue. I am running an HD Homerun Extend. Also, this issue does not happen right away. The tuner scans channels fine, and can tune to them for a few hours before the issue starts up. Also when you go to the tuner channels become de-selected. You can re-select them, but within a few hours the same behavior occurs.
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-10-12_11-30-34.zip (7.2 MB)Does anyone actually have Live TV working correctly or is it just terminally broken at present?
I have wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work with my Hauppauge Dual HD USB device, is it worth me continuing?
I get so many problems, I don’t know if there is a single cause with many symptoms, or whether each symptom has a separate cause that i need to fix.
Can anyone advise what I should do, or is it just a case of waiting for another server update to try?
I am currently on PMS Version 1.20.2.3402. Win 10.
Hauppauge Dual TV is detected on USB 3 by Plex, and works fine with the Hauppauge WinTV app (all expected channels are tuned and watchable, via an external rooftop aerial.)
When i first got the Hauppauge tuner, in July, after initial installation in PMS, I could watch and record TV successfully, but everything stopped working with the “Could not Tune Channel” error around mid-September, when I think there was an automatic PMS update?
The various problems I get are:
- When I delete /re-add the Hauppauge device from Plex, the process doesn’t scan for new channels, it just comes up with the list it always had from first installation. If I try to rescan, it just sits with a clock on 12.00 and says waiting to start scanning channels. The scan never completes.
Can I force Plex to delete the old device / channel information and start afresh?
-
If I try to select which TV area I’m in, my area (Meridian) is shown, but the transmitter (Hannington) isn’t in the transmitter list for the schedule (EPG).
-
I actually get broadcasts from two strong and two weak transmitters where I am, Crystal Palace (London) and Hannington (Meridian) are strong (Hannington strongest, but the MUXes are way down the frequency bands, so the EPG always seems to get the London channels. WIN TV correctly identifies the Freeview regions and lets me select the correct region and subregion, so the information must be there in the broadcasts.
On a good day (or is it a bad day?) tuning will pick up weaker but watchable channels from Guildford (Meridian) and Oxford (Central). Up to 245 channels are listed in Plex with no regional separation or subsets. I can’t go through them all manually to select which ones are the Hannington channels I need and if I try, I just get the “Could not tune channel” error.
Will there be a “Sort channels by signal strength” option, or “select by region”?
- Sometimes, for no apparent reason, I can watch live TV through Plex for about 5 minutes, then when I change channels I get the “Could not tune channel” error, even if I go back to the channel i was previously watching.
If you want server logs or screenshots, tell me what and I’ll provide them, otherwise I’d just be shooting in the dark.
I can bear the disappointment, it is the hope I can’t stand…
I think it is broke for some people, which is the shitiest problem to have since it is harder to narrow down.
Well, like I say, if anyone needs more specific information about my set up to help diagnose what is wrong, I’m happy to try to help. I just need to know what it is that you need to know.
I’ve been experiencing this same tuner issue, too. I’m now on (Windows) Plex Server version 1.20.3.3421. The issue seems to come and go… I think I’ve seen things work correctly after a PMS update, which gives me false hope that the issue’s been resolved… until it happens again a day or two later. I’ve had some channels give me the error while others don’t. I’ve deleted and re-setup my DVR a couple times, which makes things work for awhile, but I ultimately end up receiving the same tuner error.
I have not tried downgrading my server version yet, but may do that next.
My setup includes 1 HDHomeRun CONNECT and 4 HDHomeRun DUALs (for a total of 10 tuners). I don’t know if this is related, but I’ve noticed that when I go to (re)setup my DVR, Plex lists my DUALs twice (claiming that there are 9 HDHomeRun devices that I can add, even though each duplicate is listed with the same IP address). They weren’t always listed like this, but I’m not sure if the change happened after a recent HDHomeRun Firmware update, or after the PMS update that introduced this problem. I don’t know if it’s trying to list each DUALs’ tuners separately or not, but only one actually works when I select it and try to do a channel scan… the duplicate tuner just sits there and doesn’t find any channels.
Hello. I was about to create a new thread, but found this one. I am basically having the same issue. In my case, I am running Plex Media Server as a Docker in OMV 4. I know the server updated the Plex Media Server version to 1.20.2.3402 about 6 days ago. I restarted my OMV server today and upon restart, Live TV and DVR stopped working. I cannot tune to any channel and get the same error as other people here. This is not the first time this has happened to me. This past year, it has occurred probably about 4 times, all of them related to a restart of OMV. I can watch movies without issue, but Live TV and DVR do not work.
A strange thing I have noticed now (and after each one of these times that it stops working) is that under Settings -> General it shows Version 1.20.2.3402 and next to it “An update is available. Please install manually.”, which does not make sense as I have the latest version installed. In addition, Remote Access does not show any IPs but I still can access the server and watch movies while not on the local network. I cannot see/edit the channel mappings for the DVR as they do not load.
Has anyone figured out what is going on with Live TV and DVR and how to prevent this from happening? Any help is appreciated.
Same issue… several tuning issues on the latest update…
and then the previous version would not let me stay on live TV channels… it just kept repeating the same show…
MAKE PLEX GREAT AGAIN, PLEASE… the way it use to be… where i can scan any time i want, however files i want and not have transcoder errors… and also watch any live tv off my turner without repeating.
thanks.
if it’s not one issue it’s another.
I think there is a conflict between the Tuner Service and the Update Service:
The tuner service crashes after one use, and then I have to kill the Plex Media Service task, and the Update Service task, and restart it to get the tuner service to run again. When I restarted the Plex Media Server, by double clicking on it in the Plex Media Server folder, the Update Service task didn’t start, and now the tuner service doesn’t crash. I tried to get the Update Service to run, as well as the Update Service Launcher, but I couldn’t get either to run, and I am still able to record just fine.
Yes!!! Definitely a problem with Plex Update Service! I rebooted, Update Service was running, and no Tuner Service. I killed Update, and Media, restarted Media, and Tuner showed up, and I can record.
In my case, after multiple OMV reboots that did not solve the problem, I ended up deleting the DVR (as I was not able to use it at all). I then tried to add a new one (it found my HD Homerun Quattro without issues) but the process does not complete. It gets stuck where you enter your Zip Code for the channel guide. It will not let you click next/continue. I tried about six times to add the DVR. I let it sit for about 6 hours or so, and when I went back to add the DVR again I was able to enter the Zip Code and proceed to the next screen. At least it is a solution, albeit a horrible one. I lost my DVR schedule (which took a while to restore manually) and missed many recordings during the downtime.
Hopefully there is a fix for this, as I would hate to have to go through this with every Plex upgrade or server reboot.
I think this got fixed today - there is a patch and it looks like it was in the patch notes. I am able to tune tv again.
I installed today’s update but no luck. I cannot do a channel scan on my Hauppauge or HDHomerun tuners.
Update: Stopped Plex Update Service / restarted Media Server. Channels are scanning on Hauppauge right now.
Update 2: HD Homerun also ran channel scan successfully and I tested playback of channels from both tuners. I am back in business. Seems others are correct - the Plex Update Service is breaking DVR functionality.
please try the fix i mentioned above your post
I was wrong - tuner still does not work… Anyone know how to disable the update service on a Linux box?
What does the Plex Update Service do? Is it to keep the server up-to-date with latest software or does it update things like guide data, etc…
I don’t know, but I guess I’ll find out!
I can manually update the guide and the software versions, so I don’t really care about those functions anyway.
