# Dedicate server for 10 or 20 simultaneous transcoding

Hello, I’ve been looking for a lot of different solutions, but I often have trouble knowing the total number of simultaneous transcodings that I can do with a device.
in short I summarize, I have a nas synology which does not have an igpu, suddenly when I transcode my cpu goes to 100%
I would therefore like to install a plex server on a dedicated machine, and use my nas as a storage source.
according to my research a mac mini m2 could be interesting, but limited to 6 simultaneous transcoding, I would like to have at least the possibility of doing 10 or more.
what machine do you recommend for this?

hi thx for this reply,
I’ve already consulted this page but it didn’t really help me, I only intend to do transcoding for 1080p x264, and the Hardware Acceleration part is important and seems to perform better. suddenly I have trouble knowing what hardware between GPU and CPU I need for 10/20 simultaneous transcoding.
thats why im posting here 😛

hi, could an i9-13900K meet my need for 10/20 simultaneous transcoding? I saw that it had an igpu.

Even a Core i5-13600K would be almost sufficent. But only if there are never any subtitles being burned into the video picture.
So a Core i9-13900K (and its GPU) will provide a good amount of safety margin.
If you and your users require lots of subtitles, you can reduce the amount of expected subtitle burning-in by providing subtitles by default in the SRT format. Many Plex clients can read these natively, and thus transcoding can probably be prevented in the first place.
(if there is sufficient bandwidth available to stream the files unchanged, that is)

Then don’t try to provide 10 or 20 transcoded streams.
When idle, the Core i9-13900K will consume about 5W.

transcoding with SSA/ASS subtitles is more demanding?
it is unfortunately quite disparate in my library, can I do 10/20 transcoding with subtitles with the processors mentioned? (i9-13900K, i7-13700K or i5-13600K)

I can’t answer that. You’ll need to test it.

The sometimes intricate formatting in SSA subs will more often require burning in. So whenever possible you should make a SRT version and put it into first position when muxing the files.

well I analyzed my library a bit, a large part being animated, most of them are with ASS subs which are not convertible to srt because of the positioning. suddenly on browsers or limited tv it will have to transcode systematically
it will take power, suddenly the i9-13600k seems to be the minimum.
or else wait a few more years for more efficient processors

I can’t determine if transcoding with Sub ASS is more expensive than without.
