I’d like to be able to assign the default matching language based on the folders assigned to my library (e.g. as part of the “Add Folder” page). ![](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/plex/original/3X/3/5/353ba414811edc9eeba7cad6a2a638ca6e43a6c0.png) I own a number of movies/tv shows which I knowingly bought abroad because the German dub is… poor. At the moment I need to fix-match library items to ensure their metadata won’t show in German either. Synology’s Video Station allowed such a configuration… this way I could e.g. have 2 main movie folders such as `Movies (German)` and `Movies (English)` in my `Movies` library and let the media server take care to get the metadata in the right language without further manual intervention. I suppose such multi-language libraries are more of a rare use case… to avoid confusion for those users who don’t mind, we could have such a language setting as an optional overwrite parameter and keep the default library language. If a folder comes with a different language setting, this could overwrite this default language. ---

You can always use the ‘Fix Match’ procedure to change the metadata language per-movie or per-tv show. The other option is to create a separate library. ---

that’s how I’m doing it at the moment – does the job. coming from Synology’s Video Station (some years ago) I thought this might be an interesting QoL feature… seems there’s (a) only a small group of people with actual mixed language libraries and (b) an actual need to “improve” 😉 ---

I’m confused: Is this new because this wasn’t yet in the new Movie agent because the old one already has “Language” in the General tab ; or is this something different? (RNs mention “advanced” but I don’t see such setting in the Advanced tab.) ---

Previously you could only set the language on the library level (Library: `Edit...` \> `General` \> `Language`). If you wanted the metadata to show in a different language you had to unmatch that item and re-match it, manually specifying agent+language. Now you can switch the language of an individual item right in the advanced settings of that item (Item: `Edit` \> `Advanced` \> `Metadata language`). ---

thank you! I misinterpreted the wording. Might be helpful for others: you have to “Refresh Metadata” to enable “Advanced”. Refresh… will revert to the default language, therefore requiring setting the language the new way then refreshing again. ---

I lost an important “feature” along the way: I used to be able to have 2 items in 2 languages for the same movie (2 files in 2 different audio languages). - `Play version…` doesn’t tell much about the movie - It’s nicer to have the poster in our children native language (before they speak english 😉 Sadly, the metadata language is linked to the “movie” not to the item itself so changing one (if you `Split`) changes both and if you refresh, `Merge` is automatically performed ;( If that’s not a known bug, is there a way to report that ? ---

I know this is a bit old, but I still see enough value in having this configured at a “per-folder” level rather than having to change it manually. I have a relatively large library and it’s not comfortable to have to change things manually. Also, depending on the user, I share a “HD Movies” (1080p-) or a “All Movies” (all up to 4K) library, to avoid transcoding of 4K if they cannot reproduce 4K content. That means I have to do any manual change in two different places, which is twice as annoying 🙂
