# Does Plex identify Atmos movies correctly?

Hi all,

I’m trying to figure out if Plex identifies Atmos encoded files or not. Right now I have five Atmos movies that have been ripped to MKV containers with TrueHD or DTS-HD audio encoding. When I view them in the Plex interface, the maximum information I’m shown is that they are 7.1 tracks (and whether they are True-HD or DTS-HD, etc.) But all that tells me is that I’ve got seven channels and a sub.

Am I missing something? Should (or does) Plex show more here? I’d imagine Plex should show something like Dolby suggests: 7.1.4 (with the four showing four overhead Atmos speakers).

Appreciate any insights you can share!

A couple of things:-

-You will only get Atmos by using Dolby TrueHD audio tracks. DTS-HD does not contain Atmos encoding.  
-The Atmos speaker configuration is dependent on the room setup. You can have 5.1.2, 7.1.4, 9.1.6, and combinations thereof (e.g. 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 5.1.6). As Atmos is an object oriented audio format all of these configurations can be fed from the same Soundtrack stream. So it would be hard for Plex to display a channel configuration.  
-The Atmos audio information is in addition to the Dolby TrueHD Soundtrack for backward compatibility. A standard 7.1 Non-Atmos decoder can decode the 7.1 soundtrack as normal and I’m guessing this is what Plex sees in the file. I’m not sure how Dolby flag the Atmos soundtrack, however Plex in the past has had some trouble with DTS and DTS-MA files and displaying the audio format correctly. It may be a tweak to the server that needs to be done for Atmos (or for that matter DTS:X).

Ah, thank you very much - that helps a ton!

Hadn’t really considered the point of Atmos being object oriented = no default/set number of tracks to display. So, hopefully Plex will at least add an Atmos logo/name (if it’s possible to detect) in the future.
