Thanks for the heads up. Nice to have a fallback for the time being. Just tested it and can confirm that 4K HDR video played properly on my LG OLED.

I find it hard to believe that Plex Player for PC does not support HDR or Audio Passthrough for DTS DTS-HD etc

Can the Plex devs please put this at the top of the list as we are all currently having to use other players to play HDR content ☹ Plex should be our go to Player but is lacking too much.

Thanks for proving my point … Plex is still generations behind. We have 16 core/32 thread DESKTOP CPUs these days @ \>4 GHz with 32 GB 3200+ Memory Kits being very common … building a server that could handle 4k UHD streaming should be a thing by now. Yet plex still doesn’t support it.

Not sure why you resurrected this 3 year old thread, or what your actual point or complaint is, but if you have a specific issue or problem, then you are best served by creating a new thread with an applicable subject, all your system details including OS, cpu/ram/video, what specific plex versions and clients, what your problem actually is, and logs recreating that issue.

Who says Plex can’t handle 4K HDR? I play 4K HDR religiously… The only thing it’s _ **lacking** _ if you want to call it that, is a good way to transcode from HDR back into SDR due to lack of tone mapping… However, transcoding itself is a task that you just don’t want to perform… Even with an Overclocked Ryzen 7 2700x and an NVidia GTX 1070Ti, I can only transcode a 4K movie at about 75fps, and while this is fast enough for a single transcode on plex (and plex will indeed transcode my 4K files down to 1080p if I let it), it’s certainly not fast enough for anything else… So What is it you’re actually complaining about?

The point is that this 3 year old thread is still VALID, which is a problem. We are still stuck at 8 bit color @4k and limited to 30 fps … 3 years later. There should be no reason to transcode it at our current levels of hardware availability.

YOU might be stuck at 8bit/30hz, but plex isn’t.

Different devices have different capabilities. I suggest you do some more research before going on a random rant.

we’re NOT stuck at 8bit color, all of my 4K HDR are 10bit color, I encode them myself with staxrip… And it direct plays on all of my devices that support 4K…

Also, Plex will DirectPlay 60fps if you want it to, however, the device you’re playing it ON has to support HFR content… and a lot simply don’t… This ISN’T a Plex problem

8 bit color is not HDR, it saturates to muddy colors.
If you do native 4k UHD, you need 60 fps, 10-bit color, and 4k resolution, but plex transcodes that instead of streaming it as is.

8 or 10 bit color is not HDR

HDR is darkness to brightness levels

4k blurays are 24fps not 60

if you have some other weird 4k videos that are NOT compatible with whatever you are trying to play it on, then again please open a new thread with the applicable info and maybe you will get some actual help.

Incorrect. Plex forces transcode if it isn’t 4k, 8 bit color, 30 fps to 1080p.
8 bit color is not HDR.
30 fps is not 4k UHD.
So no, Plex does not support 4k UHD HDR streaming.

if plex is transcoding, it is because either that video is not compatible with your particular client, or there are some other limit or reason that is causing the transcode.

I suggest you carefully (re)-read the entire thread of aforementioned 4k FAQ.

Those “darkness levels” require more than 8 bits without muddy saturation. Were you one of those people that thought 16-bit color depth on Voodoo cards was better than 32-bit color gaming on the TNT cards?

4K UHD HDR BluRay for The Maze Runner… Tell me again how 23.976 fps is 60fps?

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/plex/original/3X/b/8/b837e4be290f9b24879c69d0196face76004567d.png)

HDR is a Luminance _and_ Color component I think Tekno, It utilizes the BT.2020 colorspace, which as far as I am aware, cannot be contained in an 8-bit video file… (you can show me otherwise I am open to learn it does).

But JMassa… You’re absolutely 100% incorrect… Plex does not force transcode anything… I have a BUNCH of 4K 10bit color HDR files created in StaxRip, that do NOT transcode, and DirectPlay on my Sony 4K UHD TV, as well as my Amazon FireStick 4K…

_cough_
It’s on the plex page as what they only support.

Container: MP4
Resolution: 3840x2160 or smaller
Video Encoding: HEVC (H.265)
Video Frame Rate: 30fps
Video Bit Depth: 8
**4K content not matching the above properties will be transcoded to 1080p**. Transcoding 4K content is a very intensive process and will require a powerful computer running Plex Media Server.

In other words, that 4k UHD HDR movie I encoded as the native 60 fps, 10 bit color is forced by plex to be transcoded to 1080p to be played.

Uh no.

32bit color is not HDR, just like 10bit color is not HDR. It just just more gradients of color.

Wow, that just went way over your head. I made a reference to you liking 16bit color gaming to 32bit color gaming as comparison to 8 bit color depth and 10 bit color depth. As in , you like you colors washed out and banding.
3DFX made the same argument as you, and went out of business for it.
