E-mail From PLEX asking about IP address

Server Version#:Windows 7 last update 6868 version
Player Version#:

Purchased PLEX Lifetime Pass been playing with PLEX on and off probably over 10 years. Just activated Online havent setup anybody outside of my home yet. And just got Email from PLEX

A new device was used to sign in to your Plex account:

  • Account: Johndoe
  • Device: Plex for Android (Mobile)
  • Location: Bordentown, New Jersey, United States (estimated)
  • IP address: 2600:1002:b130:2cf3:e9bb:7705:7c47:7244

If you don’t recognize this activity, we recommend that you [change your password] immediately to secure your account.

I Live in Pennsylvania I looked at activity on the server don’t see anything suspicious. What gives ? Turned OFF Remote Access till I understand whats going on ?

Someone logged into your account using a new device. Keep in mind that the location is a guess based off GEOIP information, so depending on where you live it might have been you. Did you log into a cell phone or tablet around the time the email was sent?

I did on my phone for the First Time I turned off the Wifi and used Cell Towers to see if it would work But I was still in my house. Im in Pennsylvania and the said New Jersey

IP addresses aren’t linked to an actual location. There’s services that link different information sources and attempt to narrow down where such requests come from.

For me they keep suggesting I’m accessing my server from a place ~240 km / 150 miles away from my home… I assume that’s because of how my ISP is running their backend.

TL;DR: if you did sign in from a different device (or had to re-login), that notification should be ok — even if the associated location is „a little“ off.
If you’re suspicious anyway, you could change your password and sign out all devices in the process (keep in mind this will also sign out your server and you’ll need to access it through its local IP address in order to reclaim it via Settings > Server Name > General)
Edit: also a good reminder to activate 2FA for some additional security if you haven’t already done yet

So in conclusion I guess that was my smart phone logging in through cell towers even being that far away ! Thank You !

Now the 2FA which I activated now after your suggestion on my PC using Google Vera to scan it. Got a big A$$$ code LOL to keep and paste.

Since Google Chrome is dieing on Windows 7 I opened up FireFox using its Browser on my PC went into PLEX settings to link my Google acct ! gave me another DANCE LOL after using my email got the code to open it everything looked great until …POP UP screen says a 4 digit code was sent.

Link Account

To link your account, please enter the 4-character code displayed on your app.

WHAT APP ? I am on a PC ! ???

Please read carefully if you don’t want to lose access to your Plex account:

I get the 2FA it setup and working.
The issue with changing browsers and just found out on another tablet I have installed the PLEX app did my sign in my email and password but the pop up for the other password ? When I set up the 2FA after it was done it gave me 200 digit code which I copy and pasted it to my desk top. I thought that was a recovery code or is that the one I need to use for every device I setup ? this is going to be a MAJOR pain in the but.

Never mind after harry karry and re-reading it I have 10 recovery codes. So after each time using one to activate Plex on another device the code is dead and move on to the next ? Now I have to email that back to my self

The ten recovery codes are one time use and only for if you like loose you phone with the set up authentication app. You shoujld not be using recovery codes normally. As mentioned in the two factor article the authentication app would be like Google Authenticator or 1 Password. where each time you log in with username/password it will ask you for 6 digit code which those apps generate a new one every 60 seconds..

This is mostly for the TV app like HTPC or ones on devices like Apple TV/Android TV/Roku. to sign into those apps they display a 4 character code since they do not have keyboards like your phone. which you enter at plex.tv/link which you also have to sign into and will need to use 2factor if you have it set up for your account.

A new tablet I just installed PLEX app from the Google Play store and set it up. Using already have account with Email and PW is when the verification screen is when I got worried. Yes my other TV’s where easy with the Screen QR with my phone was flawless. The tablet didn’t give me that. Just the verification screen

P.S. I used [Google Authenticator] which was easy and free when setting my PC up

Yeah because your tablet has a keyboard. The QR code/link code is mostly only for TV based apps that are meant to be controlled with a remote

Well with the Tablet to activate PLEX app I had to use one of my 10 digit codes to make it work. I should of waited and activated all PLEX devices in my family from all over before using the Dreaded 2FA

P.S. its also annoying every device has a pop up saying it has a new upgrade for my server which is NOT since its a Windows 7. Where its going to stay

I’d consider using something other than Google Authenticator. Unless they’ve changed it recently, it doesn’t provide an easy way to move all your logins to a new phone if you lost your current one. I’m really happy with Authy since you can easily use it from multiple devices including a computer and can backup your logins and easily be back up and running should you lose your only device with your 2FA setups. Download - Authy

No problem here when I switched phones a few months ago. Backup to Google drive was activated.

I mean if your phone was stolen or lost it can be a problem but maybe they’ve finally addressed that shortcoming since I last used it.
