My server is a low power PC and my client is a PS4. I can play 1080p content except when it includes subtitles. In that case I have to lower the quality to 720 to be able to see the content without stops.
Would not it be possible to encode the subtitles using the client’s graphics card instead of doing it with software with the server like, for example, does Kodi?
Yes, I know that there is no version of KODI for PS4, but on an Android TV (which I also have in another house), movies always play fantastically whatever they may be and have the format they have.
This is not exactly a PMS related feature, it depends largely on the client. Some clients (like PfK, PMP etc) can decode subtitles, some can’t. Also the format of subtitles can play a role in the support. Overall it’s difficult to guarantee that each and every client supports subs, although I agree that it would be so cool. It’s the main reason why I sometimes use OpenPHT instead of the Opera TV app on my smart TV
It’s a shame, but Kodi is much better player than any Plex client. If it were easy to configure Kodi to work with a centralized database located along with media files (for example with sqlite), PLEX would have little to do.
For example, Kodi has fast forward and fast reverse and fast language and subtitle switching. In Plex you have to do it in jumps.
Anyway. I hope they are improving Plex so that, little by little, they start to look something like a server-based Kodi.
And, of course, without an Internet connection being necessary
