I’m putting this in “general” because it refers to Player, Server, and Roku client.
In the recent announcement about the Media Player it says: “we’re going to stop supporting the traditional HTPC setup”. To me that means the Media Server and Roku Client (among others) will also cease.
Please tell me that aint so!
Did you read the whole blog post?? The phrase you quoted from the blog post isn’t even the whole sentence. The parenthetical statement immediately following that phrase explains what is meant by it. The rest of the paragraph, and the rest of the post, makes it clear that the server and other clients are continuing.
In fairness, that blog post was pretty confusing. It would have been more clear in a chart showing what type of users/applications would be affected.
I’m sorry beckfield, but I have just re-read that whole post and I come away with the distinct impression that the whole “traditional HTPC setup” which is a “client-server” concept is being done away with. That would mean that the new app would be focused only on streaming.
I do not do streaming, I access my media library through the Plex Server running on a Windows PC, over our home network, using the Plex Channel client on Roku devices.
I am still concerned.
If, however, all that’s happening is a new app, by a new name, is replacing the functionality of the Plex Media Player; leaving the rest of the Plex family intact, then I’m happy – but I’m seeking assurances that such is the case.
Yep that’s what is happening.
Well put.
beckfield says that the parenthetical phrase after what I quoted explains what it meant. I agree completely: It explains that they are doing away with “(using a desktop computer connected to your TV or home theatre)”. “Desktop Computer” would be the server, and “TV” would be my TV(with its attached ROKU). That’s what I’m afraid of.
I think it’s beckfield who misinterpreted the post, not me.
Plex Inc have made it very clear that HTPC support is going. That is not their focus.
PMP is the start.
They are solely focusing on providing an interface for streaming devices and nothing more.
You lost me. PMP is solely a HTPC or general Windows/Mac client.
Removing HTPC supports only affects PMP users.
Bottom line though is I answered an ops question so any further speculation is irrelevant.
That is, indeed, very disappointing.
I hope that the existing versions will be kept for legacy users who, like me, do not do streaming.
If not I’m not sure what I could change to.
You really need to clarify here. What device are you using to view Plex?
You mention a Roku and that is nothing to do with either PMP or an HTPC.
Yes, if you, like many others, are using a device with Plex to stream locally from your HTPC, the future is uncertain.
This is a common setup with my friends - local streaming.
With Plex Incs open comments saying support for HTPC is not their focus, those users should be concerned.
(1) Windows PC running “Plex Media Server” (that’s the HTPC) on a home network.
(2) Several TVs, each of which has an attached ROKU box. On each ROKU Box has an app, created by Plex to act as a client to search, find, select, and play items on the Plex Media Server) In general computer parlance that’s a “Client/Server” setup.
I do not use the Plex Media Player as it’s a PC based program. The thing that “plays” the media files is the Plex created app on the ROKU box.
It’s only an HTPC IF you are running PMP on it. If not its the server only.
If you watch via the Roku’s only then nothing has changed.
It means nothing of the sort.
Never mind
I don’t really care what you have.
You are not the op asking the question.
He uses Roku’s as clients.
I disagree. I honestly don’t think they could’ve been any clearer. I mean, they literally spelled it out for you… how much more clear could it get. Yeesh.
With respect, Hitsville-UK; we’ll have to agree to disagree on the interpretation of “HTPC”.
I interpret HTPC as a computer that acts as the central controlling device for media playback but not necessarily played on that device.
Before Hitsvill-UK goes crazy by your confusion…
Here’s a definition:
HTPC refers to a computer running a software that displays media (e.g. a movie) on a home theatre device (such as your TV, a projector) by directly connecting that home theatre device to your pc.
This is absolutely NOT about Plex ending the Plex Media Server or the other clients.
The Blog actually specifically refers to continuing development for dedicated players such as mobile or set-top-boxes.
Again I am referring to the op not knowing what an HTPC is.
The Blog and elsewhere says the HTPC is no longer Plex Incs focus.
That includes PMP and clearly PMS.
