What’s wrong with my configuration? I’m trying to transcode a 1080p HEVC 10-bit file to 1080p 8Mbps without any subtitle, but choosing other settings will result in the same thing. I sure hope I didn’t pay for Plex Pass for nothing. The HW transcoding was the main reason for me. ---

Please verify DEBUG logging ON, VERBOSE logging OFF. Now recreate the problem. wait 30 seconds Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs Attach the ZIP please. ---

What I find in your logs: (Please turn VERBOSE off again? [DEBUG logging](https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/#toc-1) is optimal and the default. VERBOSE actually loses information after 2 minutes of elapsed time). 1. J4105 CPU 2. 33 Mbps HEVC 3. 10 bit color input → 8 bit color output (transcoding forced) 4. 8 channel audio input → 6 channel (5.1) 5. 10 bit color hardware support verified 6. Video is being properly done in hardware Audio conversion is being properly done in software. Subtitles must be burned in software — this is where it falls short (No Intel - Vaapi support for subtitles in hardware yet). 2942 Passmarks. It’s a NAS processor. How exactly do I do that? The only options that I can see for subtitles burning are Automatic, Only Image Formats and Always. It was set to Automatic by default. I’ve changed it to Only Image Formats, but I still get the same thing, even when choosing an audio track that doesn’t need transcoding. It doesn’t help either if, when playing back the video, I choose No Subtitles or and external SRT subtitle. To turn off VERBOSE logging is the inverse of how you turned it on. I cannot work with VERBOSE logging. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced. 1. DEBUG logging **Checked** 2. VERBOSE logging **Unchecked** 3. SAVE changes. Regarding unwanted subtitles in streams, I remove them with mkvtoolnix-gui / mkvmerge package. It remultiplexes the stream (does not re-encode the stream) ---

Those are the exact settings that are currently configured. And it was the same situation before I grabbed the logs too. Now, to understand your workaround, you’re basically saying that I need to re-mux the movie including just the video & audio track(s), but without any subtitle track. I don’t understand why I have to do that since I am not using those subtitles at all. I am always using external SRT subtitles. So, in this case, how can I disable the embedded subtitle burning when doing the transcode? If it cannot be done it’s a major flaw of the system and needs to be corrected ASAP. There was no mention anywhere of this limitation when you buy the Plex Pass. False advertising to say the least… ---

There is another aspect of this discussion. Should PMS disqualify / disable subtitles on any CPU which doesn’t have the computational performance to burn subtitles? Should Plex deny installation on some of these CPUs? At present, Plex imposes no limitations. They do presume the user understands the equipment in his possession and, with a bit of additional information, understands the limitations imposed on Plex Media Server due to Intel / vaapi limitations. ---

It’s very simple. Just leave the option to disable subtitle burning to the customer. You don’t need to impose anything, because obviously you don’t know on what machine the PMS will be installed on. Right now it seems like this is not available and I don’t understand why… ---

With your logs I can see the root problem which is the conversion of the formats. This isn’t an easy task. It’s inefficient as heck due to how the formats are written. Your choices are: 1. Curate the media before you give it to Plex. 2. Get something better than the J4105 . You are getting the performance you paid for and, unfortunately, it’s coming up short because the J4105 is still a Celeron CPU. Yes, I’ve checked the list and noticed that my NAS model (HS-453DX) is not listed. It’s probably because it wasn’t tested. There is however an ASUS AS-5304T with the same processor onboard and that model looks quite good in terms of HW transcoding. Mine also comes with 8GB DDR4 RAM, so there should be no problem on that side either. The issue is clearly the subtitles, just like you’ve mentioned above, but again, the user should have the option in the client to **disable subtitle burning** , especially when he is not using the ASS embedded subtitles. It makes absolutely no sense to have those subtitles being forced into the stream if they are not used! P.S.: Curating the media before feeding it to Plex kind of defeats the whole purpose of Plex. If you need to transcode, re-mux, burn subtitles, etc. you might as well use DLNA, which is more limited in terms of features, but can work very well if you have the right media files for the client device. My expectation was to be able to play everything, no matter the file format & client device, relying on Plex to transcode and re-mux as needed (and using HW acceleration as it’s one of most marketed feature of both the NAS & Plex with Plex Pass). The truth is however very disappointing… ---
