# External SRT Subtitles

Greetings,
Yesterday, I installed Plex Media Server on my PC running Windows 10 (64 bit). However, when I stream my video library content to my Sony BDP-S6700 player connected to a Samsung TV, the external SRT subtitles don’t show up. Someone told me on another thread that external subtitles are only supported by Plex real clients and my Blu-ray player is not a real Plex client.
So what can I do to solve this problem? Should I install another media server instead of Plex? If that’s the case, what media servers do you recommend that support SRT external subtitles on my Sony Blu-ray player?

Plex is picky regarding names. Make sure you strictly follow folder structure & naming conventions. See External Subtitle Files section: [https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220677-local-media-assets-movies/](https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220677-local-media-assets-movies/)
Also, as a test, try playing via Plex Web or Plex Media Player. If they don’t show in either of those they won’t show up on other clients.

Yes, the subtitles show up when I play a movie on the Plex Media Player, but not on my Sony Blu-ray player. As I explained above, someone told me that external SRT subtitles are only supported by Plex real clients and that my Sony Blu-ray player is not a real Plex client. Therefore, I would like to know if this is true or not.

If @OttoKerner says external subtitles are not supported for generic DLNA clients, then they’re not supported.
Some options:
Obtain a Plex client that does support external subtitles: Android TV (Amazon Fire TV, Nvidia Shield, others), Roku, Apple TV, etc. See the web page OttoKerner mentioned in his message.
Use a tool such as MKVToolNix, [https://mkvtoolnix.download/](https://mkvtoolnix.download/), or XMedia Recode, [https://www.xmedia-recode.de/en/](https://www.xmedia-recode.de/en/), to mux the subtitles into your movie files (so they are no longer external subtitles).
You could try other home media products such as Emby or Kodi. No idea if they would work. Suggest you check on their respective support forums.
