Hello Plex Team,
I would like to submit a feature request regarding Dolby Vision playback on Android TV devices that technically support it.
On supported media boxes such as the Homatics Box R 4K Plus (Amlogic S905X4), Dolby Vision Profile 7.6 with Full Enhancement Layer (FEL) can be played correctly using other media players (e.g. Kodi). In these cases, the device outputs Dolby Vision as expected without falling back to HDR10.
In the Plex Android TV app, however, the same content currently falls back to HDR10 instead of using Dolby Vision Profile 7.6, even though the hardware and the underlying OS are capable of handling it. This strongly suggests a limitation in the Plex client or playback pipeline rather than a hardware or OS restriction.
From a user perspective, this is frustrating because:
-
The media box fully supports Dolby Vision Profile 7.6 (including FEL)
-
The same files work correctly on the same device with other players
-
Plex unnecessarily degrades playback quality by forcing an HDR10 fallback
Feature request:
Please add proper support for Dolby Vision Profile 7.6 on Android TV devices that are technically capable of decoding and outputting it, instead of forcing an HDR10 fallback. If full FEL processing is not possible in all scenarios, even a transparent and consistent handling strategy (clearly documented) would be preferable to the current silent fallback.
I am a Plex Pass subscriber and heavily invested in the Plex ecosystem. Improving Dolby Vision handling on capable Android TV devices would significantly enhance the premium home theater experience Plex aims to deliver.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best regards
