You spoke from your use case...Which is FWIW identical to mine, but....

Other users might have the need for local clients to access plex.tv for authentication, like....

TV in main room....Logged in as a user with full access to everything....

Another player in the kids room, where you do not want them to access, like zombie movies, so they are authenticating towards plex.tv

> Is not true, plenty of us could still enjoy Plex..

but not all of us, my plex server is not local to anyone, it's in a data center... so short of begging one of the firewall guys to set up a temporary VPN so I could use it "locally" all \*MY\* media was unavailable

I love plex, I just don't love the idea of SaaS

and I've said it multiple times, I am willing to PAY for a stand alone version, just to get away from the whole SaaS plex

Hence the reason I said "plenty of us".

The post i was responding to said&nbsp;

which is simply not true.

But interesting that you are ok relying on a remote server to house your Plex Server when one guy with a wayward tree trimmer could take your Plex access out for longer than the time Plex was down.

not likely, our data center has multiple redundant fibers going in different directions, redundant routers with with redundant mid-layer routers and redundant switches, multiple generators, battery backup systems etc etc along with multiple power drops from the power company, at home I have cable with LTE backup... so if I lose internet in either place it would be a pretty bad failure...

but see I can plan for that, I can't plan for someone somewhere else making sure something is up... hence why I'd rather do it myself...

Its 2016, Can we not let users decide what authentication method works for their setup? I would like to see LDAP support for Plex for SSO - Huge, everything else in my home network syncs with my LDAP server. One password to remember, easy to reset for users. One place for security settings and controls.

I don’t like the fact that when users forget their password they need to f\*\*k around with [plex.tv](http://plex.tv) to get it reset - which results in them nagging the crap out of me until I hold their hand.

The change user feature only works with giving out the main account, or at least thats the only way I could ever get it function. Yea there’s pin’s what the point of a pin if they know the main account password.

</div>

Making this an option would not force everyone to it, build in the added functionality, leave [plex.tv](http://plex.tv) auth as an option. But also allow those willing and able to setup an LDAP/AD instance and easy central management location. This would probably also make Plex much more attractive to larger organizations.

</div>

Please, don’t ignore this more than reasonable feature request. Me and plenty of others I know have all kinds of services (mail/cloud/streaming/wiki…) working with LDAP authentication and it works great. Plex is wonderful service and it literally deserves SSO support. I will buy lifetime Plex Pass the day LDAP support is added and I am not alone.

Reviving this, although with how much plex has been pushing their own server based auth, I doubt they’ll want to introduce a reason to reduce telemetry gathering…

LDAP is amazing, adding it as an OPTION, (not the only option!) would be fantastic.

Emby is looking more appealing by the day…

</div>

I am somewhat furious that it’s not possible for Plex to work without being slaved to their cloud login service… we need to be able to entirely self host, including user authentication, if we choose to.

</div>

I can only agree with the previously posted replies. I love plex for what it does right but the authentication via plex.tv bugs me every day. As said by others: I would pay to be able to authenticate my users via LDAP. It would just be an option, not the default. The Possibility to authenticate to my various web services with one account and 2FA would be soooo nice.

Maybe some official could say, why LDAP is not a thing yet. I can not understand why some really specific features are being pushed forward and basic things are being ignored.

</div>

There may be a better solution, I run Emby Media and I love it. I am giving Plex a try to see which I like best. Emby does give the option to use Active Directory/LDAP.
I came to this page looking for a way to setup LDAP but it seems like that isn’t a feature at the moment. I guess my Emby setup has the upper hand on that.

+1 for this feature, although I doubt Plex will give up their control over users and the requirement for logging through Plex’s site.

</div>

+1 – seriously after today’s breach it’d be unconscionable for Plex to not add it. It’s clear that they can’t be trusted to run a federated auth service for local stream servers. The numerous outages and news of the recent breach show that not only do the majority of people want the **option** to run a local auth, it’d be a more stable secure solution

+1 with what just happened with the breach and Plex auth going down multiple times over the years, having local auth and removing Plex.tv auth completely should be on the roadmap, even if it means losing plexpass

</div>

+1 for us to have local authentication!

There are a lot of us that are hosting authentik or keycloak which would give us access to SAML, Open ID or LDAP auth into Plex. I would suggest not ldap and use SAML. It would be great for users to be able to have SSO and MFA into hosted server with a hosted auth server. This way we aren’t reliant on plex.tv to be up just our hosted server.

So how does this vote system work?

I want exactly what the previous commenter said, (using with the selfhosted authelia/authentik/keycloak) but with only 31 votes this will never ever be implemented?

They direct people here, and then ignore it. That’s how the vote system works.

Right @tom80H?

You are afraid of the response if you made an honest statement (we will never allow control of this to leave our (Plex) servers, as it would reduce our user data aggregation ability, and impact our revenue)
