[Feature Request] Option to disable auto-generated thumbnails (sports spoilers)

Used Plex for a show and got spoiled again tonight. I have Emby and I do use it, but it seems like Plex would have a solution for this by now. Any word? I don’t see how this was ever allowed to be an issue in the first place. Spoilers are kind of a big deal IMO. lol

At least in Apple TV client is quite easy to get some spoiler when selecting a TVShow episode because the thumbnails of next ones are visible. I don’t know in other players.
Thanks !!!

How is this not a thing yet?

Hey Plex? Any update on this? All we’re asking for is the option to turn off episode images for a specific series. It’s been 5 years…

I set up the script for Tautulli to blur the images. It was working last I used it.

I’ll throw my hat in. Not just sports, but suspense dramas, reality shows, elimination shows. Huge spoiler issue when those images come up. Hard not to look, and once you have it’s all over. Dammmn! Adjusting the image fetch to the beginning of the episode would be nice, but wouldn’t help with shows other than sports.

I think it would be best as a show option. If it were a library option I would have to create a lot more libraries to navigate, since there are so many different show types affected. Of course both options would be the ultimate.

Thanks for this!

For anyone coming across this, Plex obviously doesn’t care that people have issues with this since it’s been 8 years now so here’s how you can solve the issue yourself:

  1. Install TAUTULLI
  2. Download this script (click RAW and download it)
  3. You need to have python, plexapi and requests installed.
  4. Follow the setup instructions under the heading " Setting Up Tautulli for Custom Scripts" on this github repo page.

It’s not instant, but does work within several minutes I’ve found. Also you need to ensure however you’re running Tautulli (docker in my case) has read/write access to your library (since it will be reading the video and creating a .png for it)

Good luck!

It would help with Big Brother which has the most egregious spoilers I’ve seen on Plex over the years. The two places that Plex chooses from nearly always show the outcome of the episode in one thumbnail.
This is a feature request that should have been a feature in 2016.

Unreal that the folks at Plex couldn’t be bothered to implement this. I just installed Emby and it was super easy to set up my TV Shows library to not download episode artwork/thumbail, so I have officially switched to Emby. So long, Plex! Thanks for not caring about your users! I hope to never see you again!

Excellent will go try this on the weekend.

Seems so unnecessary though, one would think it’s at most a day’s work to add a simple toggle to the interface to not generate thumbnails.

This would be great for TV shows like Survivor… Disabling the thumbnails would prevent spoilers.

I’d love to see this implemented. I think a lot of different genres could benefit from this, not only sports (e.g. drama’s, reality shows, game shows, etc.). I’ve gone so far as to manually embed custom thumbnails into MP4s to prevent thumbnail spoilers for shows I’m watching with other people. Unfortunately, this process doesn’t work for MKV containers and the auto generated thumbnails get used instead. Personally, I’d think a “Anti-Spoiler” mode could simply hide the auto generated thumbnails (by replacing them with a placeholder), episode descriptions, and in some cases titles, when enabled.

Hey guys,

So I’m not a fan of film trailers, for one reason… they tend to spoil the storyline.

A few times now, the thumbnails in Plex have given away vital plot details and outcomes. A few times the thumbnail has shown an image from the last 20 minutes of a reality show… with the upset face of the person who lost, making the outcome of the episode apparent before watching the episode. This is a serious breach of the viewing experience and is making me question whether I want to keep Plex.

I am using a Mac and also a Samsung smart TV. Please, if anyone can help me completely remove auto-generated thumbnails I would be super chuffed! Otherwise if there some way to make thumbnails generate from the first 5 minutes of a video file, this would make WAY more sense.

Or could you add the option to remove all thumbnail images and replace them with the poster of the TV show/film?

Thanks

Any update on this plex dev’s ???

Yup title pretty much says it, there should be an option that hides or blurs the thumbnail for unwatched tv show episodes. Too many times you see an images of future episode that spoil it.

“example watching show next episode shows picture of the character that died prev episode huge spoiler.”

Would be nice if it blurred until marked watched.

If there is a way to do this now please let me know.

thanks

This is so needed. I keep having to have my SO close her eyes while watching breaking bad cause the thumbnails spoil so much.

Please let us hide preview pics of episodes to avoid spoilers.

Thanks

Please make it possible!!

Bump. Would like

This request started in 2015 and was from existing requests for the same, and it’s STILL not been implemented!

Why has this not been added as an option?! Most people don’t want to see a spoiler from a TV episode, whether it’s sport, a cooking competition or a TV thriller! Please give us the option to simply disable the thumbnails and apply it with a simple image/logo from each TV show!

Shouldn’t have to wait 9 years for this!

Thanks
