When I record 4 shows that end at the same time using my HDHomeRun Quattro, Comskip runs simultaneously for all 4 shows. This chews up 95% of the CPU on my Synology 918+, and causes Plex to crash if it’s trying to record subsequent shows at the same time.
I agree that this is a necessary feature, and it would be great if it was added.
It’s almost impossible to watch live TV right after a recording that needs commercial removal. If I manually use the “renice” command for the “commercial removal” process and set it to 19 for example, then everything works great.
Perhaps another way to go around this problem would be to have an option to do all of the necessary Comskip operations post-process during the Scheduled Tasks.
Thanks.
I hadn’t thought about your suggestion, but why not defer commercial removal for “later”? Good idea!
As excited as i was to hear about the DVR option in Plex to include comskip it was not made with the HDHomerun Quattro in mind. Admittedly, its rare that i need 4 shows in parallel but even 3 shows can crash plex and delete all evidence of the scheduled shows. MCEBuddy for example lets you set the number of shows to be converted and processed in parallel. It even lets you set how many threads/cores to allot. Whether its queuing or priority, Plex needs SOMETHING to be compatible with more than one show at a time. its a fact of life that prime time OTA TV overlaps a lot of shows Mon-Thur, 8pm-11pm. The good news is the last couple Plex updates have made progress so its consistent with up to 2 simultaneous shows, recording and watching. but needs to be able to handle 4 shows in order to let me move on from MCEBuddy on a PC to do comskip portion.
Com’on Plex, we love you but want to love you more!

Just started using DVR. I love it! Taking the commercials out automatically is a dream come true. I bought the hdhomerun duo. In my short amount of playing with this, I’m thinking I should return for the quattro. I’m not understanding what you are saying about 2 shows possible even with 4 tuners. So starting with the duo, you can either record two shows at the same time or record one show and watch another. Is that right? And the quattro? Second, if I am (duo) recording one show while watching another, what happens if I tell it to record a second show at the same time? Will it error out or will it tell me I can’t do it? Thanks in advance. This technology is exciting to say the least.
HDHomeRun assigns tuners on a first come, first served basis. So if you have two tuners, whoever gets there first wins, the loser sees an error message along the lines of “no tuner available”.
The problem I (and imtheguy) are having is that when you do “too much” at once, Plex crashes/burns, mangling your recordings.
Solved! Apparently the “stability” fixes the Plex team has been working on in the server solves this issue. I can record 4 shows (using my HDHomeRun Quattro), have Plex remove commercials, and NOT crash. That last part? Priceless.
