A lot of DVR-type players have a feature that, like Plex, shows you image previews of the video you're watching while fast forwarding or rewinding. Some of those have a very handy feature in which pressing Play during Rewind of Fast Forward begins playback a few seconds before (in FF, or after in Rewind) the point at which Play was pressed. This eliminates human reaction time from causing the, "Oops, went too far," moments that I'm sure many of us face with some regularity.

I brought this up on Reddit to try to gauge if I was alone in wanting this, and got a helpful response from someone who expressed what I want better than I have:

> But when you hit resume / play, it would be totally reasonable to have it rewind an amount equal to **human reaction time multiplied by the current rate [of rewind/fast forward]**.

I think this is probably more useful for fast forwarding for rewinding, personally, and since the preview always seems to work better with fast forward, it might be a much more effective feature if it only affected the playback time when resuming play from fast forward, but that all might be speculative.

I originally posted this thread in the PHT Plex Plass forum. This seems a more appropriate place.

Click to like this post if you'd like to show the devs your interest in this feature.

Thank you.

I'm the guy that phrased it like that! And I would support this feature!

At one point, I believe TiVo had patented this specific behavior or at least tried very hard to do so.

I've been looking through Google Patents all morning. You're right. Here's the patent in question:

[https://www.google.com/patents/EP1183689A1?cl=en&dq=fast+forward+tivo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=2i7RU\_r9NuzJsQSx4ILICw&ved=0CBsQ6AEwADgK](http://www.google.com/patents/EP1183689A1?cl=en&dq=fast+forward+tivo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=2i7RU_r9NuzJsQSx4ILICw&ved=0CBsQ6AEwADgK)

They call it an "automatic playback overshoot correction system." They release their source code under the GPL v2, which I know basically nothing about. But they publish it all here:

Hopefully this knowledge is of use to someone.

Considering how many years our Brighthouse/Spectrum DVRs had this, I’m surprised this hasn’t been incorporated yet. Software-wise, I wouldn’t think this would be that difficult. I was looking for a place to give feedback about the difficulty of stopping at the correct location during FF/REW while watching recorded OTA shows on our Roku, so this is at least related.

> Personally I'd love to have resuming from playback rewind 5 seconds in the stream. We have a house with kids, and often you've got to take breaks to deal with a fight, get someone a snack, someone has an emergency bathroom break, etc. Moreover, pause/play seems to take a few seconds for the audio to start playing even though the video starts up - rewinding a touch would fix that issue. Bonus points if the rewind distance scales with how long you've been paused for (for forgetful brains.…
