Further information: PMS is on a Synology NAS DS918+ and I’m using the Plex app on Fire TV.
I think it might be a bug or a setting that I cannot find access to, but if I try to play a file with a DDP7.1 (DD+7.1 / EAC3 7.1) Plex will just not play the file. It won’t automatically transcode the audio like it does with TrueHD 7.1 and it just hangs and gives me a black screen. If I look at the dashboard when the black screen is on the media player it shows that the video is playing, however on my actual media player it sticks at 0:00. If I scroll to the left and ask it to transcode then it will play. But I don’t need it to transcode the video. It should ONLY transcode the audio but there is no option for this.
Any ideas on how to get around this? I seem to recall previously that I’d seen some posts about modifying an xml file on my PMS to force it to transcode certain files but can’t seem to find the thread now.
But either way, I only need it to transcode the audio and NOT the video. The video is fine and does NOT need transcoding. It’s just the 7.1 EAC3 that it doesn’t like.
Please can somebody help me as this is driving me nuts!
Thanks for your support thus far @trumpy81 it’s much appreciated.
I’ve updated my DSM to 7.0 and reinstalled Plex but that hasn’t changed anything. My time and date are set correctly on my NAS.
What I’m confused with is why can my NAS/Plex play a 4K remux with 7.1 TrueHD correctly (ie. direct play video and transcoded audio) but it can’t do the same with this 1080p file with Dolby Digital Plus 7.1? It’s just a black screen with this particular movie.
It plays Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 with no issues (both direct play and no transcoding).
It seems like I’m missing something in Plex settings maybe, or it’s a bug?
According to your logs, your Fire TV and whatever it is connected to are both reporting that they support 8 channel eac3. The file is being direct played so if there is an issue it’s outside of the Plex app and something with either the Fire TV or what it’s connected to.
Go into your Fire TV audio settings and change the surround option from DDP to something else.
