Normally I keep my TV shows in a folder called /series and in that folder I got a folder for every TV Show. In that folder I keep the files directly, but also sometimes the files in a own folder (often named as the file). This works well mosty.

I have a show we can call “name” and I kept it in /series/name. All was good. But for different reasons, I had to move most of the files to /series/name/name but I also kept some files in /series/name. By doing that, it was like Plex didn’t get that there was files in /series/name.

I then moved back to keeping all in /series/name but got one episode directly in that folder, but also in a separate folder, named like the file. It was an episode in a better video quality, and I want Plex to index both versions, being able to “play version”. The naming is correct of the files, with S01E01, but Plex will now not index the file /series/name/“folder with episode name”/“file with episode name” but only the first version.

Only this folder organization is supported: [Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support](https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/)

Anything else _may_ work for a while but is in no way guaranteed to do so forever.

But, if the first folder after /series/ is recognized as a show, then everything in it, with file structure as “name.S01E1.something.avi” will be scanned, right? Even though that file is in a folder?

Oh, I have. But the only part that I find relevant for me now, is this?

## Standard, Season-Based Shows

Most television shows have episodes organized into seasons. To name season-based shows create files with the season and episode notation SXXEXX

- /TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Optional\_Info.ext

This is only an example. The important bit in the file name is the appropriate season and episode number notation **s02e17** which in this example means Season 2 Episode 17 It does not matter if you use dashes, dots or just spaces.

And I got the s02e17 for both files. And Plex gets other shows with some files directly in the folder, and some files in folders named as the file.

That’s why I ask if Plex may skip the file in the separate folder since there’s already a file with the same episode, instead adding it to be two versions?

If you have duplicate versions, add them into the same `season` folder as the other version. Add some distinguishing info in square brackets at the end of the file name.
e.g.

```auto
/TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Optional_Info[SD].ext
/TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Optional_Info[HDR].ext
```

It doesn’t really matter what you use inside the brackets `[...]`. It only serves to make the file names unique.

You can also opt to build a completely separate folder structure for the same show:

```auto
/TV Shows/ShowName [SD]/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Optional_Info.ext
/TV Shows/ShowName [HDR]/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17 – Optional_Info.ext
```

This latter option enables you to use “[Split](https://support.plex.tv/articles/201018248-merge-or-split-items/)” at the show level (for whatever reason).
