Friend is unable to download media from my server

Hello, I am looking for help. I am a monthly subscriber and I shared my library with a friend and asked him to download media from my server instead of trying to play it as I don’t have the fastest PC for transcoding. When he opens Plex for windows and finds something he wants to download and clicks the download button he is prompted to sign up for a membership. I thought only the media sever (me) needs a membership for someone to by able to download media, am I wrong? Why is he getting prompted when I have a membership? Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Augie

To sync (download) the person downloading needs to have plex pass as well as the person running the server. At least that is how I read the support page.

That’s not correct!

From https://support.plex.tv/articles/downloads-on-desktop/

Requirements

  • The owner of the Plex Media Sever needs an active Plex Pass subscription
  • Must be running Plex Media Server version 1.16.3 or newer
  • Both the Plex Media Server and the Plex app on Windows or Mac must be signed in to a Plex account

@Augustine : Not sure where exactly your friend is clicking… there should be no popup if they simply try to download/sync and you enabled sync/downloading for them beforehand

I will ask him to check but he said he tried using the Plex for Windows and the Plex Media player and he said both times when he clicks on download he gets the popup for him to sign up for a membership.

Plex Media Player has no option to download/sync content.
That’s only Plex for Mac/Windows (download) or the mobile apps (sync).

Maybe your friend can share a screenshot of where they’re clicking the download option and what popup they get
