Gear VR?

I'm not 100% clear on what is different between Google's Daydream and Samsung's Gear VR (beyond samsung's only working with samsung phones but googles also works with samsung phones). Would Plex VR actually require a Daydream for some reason or does it matter very much which phone based VR headset you're using?

Google developed the Android platform. Samsung, takes an Android release and customizes it with their own software and OS updates.

As a result, a Samsung should mostly be compatible with Google hardware because that’s it’s base, and the Android platform fairly universal.

Samsung hardware, which is specifically built with Samsung devices and OS variants in mind probably will not be compatible with Google software unless it is specifically designed to be.

I’m not sure, because I haven’t used the Google hardware, but I know that Samsung partnered with Oculus to develop the Gear VR, and as a result it uses a variant of the Oculus UI. I don’t think Google does?

It would appear that the Samsung phones support the Daydream platform.

Yup, I’m aware of that. But I’m trying to decide whether I’d prefer to buy a Daydream headset or Gear VR headset. I’m hoping plex supports both so that doesn’t have to factor into the decision.

Yes, but the issue is that the Samsung Gear VR requires a good degree of trickery to run the Daydream platform. It can be done, but it wasn’t designed to do so.

it would indeed appear it does require some hoops to be jumped through:

So that’s helpful, but what I’m still really hoping is that Plex is platform agnostic. I can’t imagine what special features of one over the other it uses so hopefully if it isn’t yet it will be available on both soon.

Im hoping the Samsung does the trick, the Daydream hardware is not available here in Netherland. :frowning:

This article makes it appear you only need to install it:

and/or troubleshoot

either way, im buying an S8 tonight

So I have gone ahead and used Play Cardboard apps on Gear VR to succesfully load the Plex VR app on my S8/Gear VR. However, once I get to the grant permissions screen it’s game over. There are currently no controls enabled by the app that are Gear VR supported. I tried every controller that I have (and note: they all work with the Gear VR):

So at this point I have found that the lack of controller support, so far, is the only limitation and thing prohibiting us from being able to use the app on the Gear. I’m a sad panda.

If by “trickery” you mean running a simple app that you can download from the Google Play Store…then I guess yeah…but in all honesty it’s incredibly simple.

Don’t do it. You will be wasting your cash. Please refer to my testing above.

So why not GearVR I would imagine the majority of plex users have that platform rather than daydream. Have been a plexpass owner for years and am extremely surprised that you have made it platform exclusive.

Not impressed

I am really excited to try it out on my 2 daydreams tonight. so, I guess some of us DO have daydream.

#13

@Dafreakzo Crap, too late, bought one, ah wel…

#14

Had anyone tried getting daydream to run on an S8 active? Very sad to be missing out on Plex VR.

I have an S8 and the free Gear VR by Oculus that I got with it. But after going through the steps I cannot get past the Daydream controller pairing setup. Not sure how to get around that. Has anyone actually got Plex VR working on the Gear VR?

Yes, I got it working. Check my previous post. You need to press the back button on the screen and it will take you to the gear vr app.

Okay, I am at the same point you are - grant permissions and not able to proceed any further. So it would seem that using our Gear VR is currently not an option at this time. :frowning:

Yup, it’s a shame that we both had the same experience. Someone on another forum said that there is a way to enable the touchpad but I had gone through all the settings and am unable to find this option to enable.

Yep, it appears the issue lies with the DayDream controller at the moment. DayDream does not like our GearVR controller. But im sure there will be a work around or compatability update soon. We need to push this on the developers. Very unfair for making it only work for one new device like the DayDream, which in my opinion is not better then the GearVR. I’v been a lifetime Plex pass member for years, so im dissapointed in Plex’s decision on this.

And I see some confusion in the previous posts. Galaxy S8, and other androids work. As long as the software is compatible for your phone it will work.

What do I need?

Going into the virtual reality matrix is easy, you just need a few things to get started:

**Android Phone

Daydream-ready phone
Headset

Google Daydream View headset
App

Plex VR app
(available on Google Play)**

I was really hoping that a Plex employee would have replied to this thread at some point. This is why I don’t like forum posts for tech support questions. It’s great that everybody here was able to educate eachother on the differences between Daydream and Gear VR and talk about the feasibility of running Daydream on a Gear VR, but really I just wanted to ask if Plex planned to release Plex VR for both platforms. That’s something only a Plex employee could realistically comment on.
