# Genre management

Dear all,
I really would love to have a genre management tool. Now, with lots of films, the "search by genre" is just a mess (with hundreds of genres which are sometimes just like big joke). I don't know how it is in english as I am german and trying to use german titles and summaries as far as possible.. But really: the genres are not useable and my usual way of starting the eventing is by thinking about a certain genre and go..

Not much better if you are only dealing with one language, so I can imagine it only gets worse for the multilingual.
There are almost as many different genres as there are titles...

Nope, cuz you already gave it to this post, and thats fine.
I was more looking for input into my suggestion about a community driven "Categories" thingy, that could be handled by a central place, like Plex?

Well, I voted for your suggestion, too. As for community-driven -- alas -- I've become wary of group-think management solutions and lean more in the direction of a genre-management tool I could run independently (i.e., for music, more like MP3tag rather than last.fm). The poster-matching and descriptions and ratings are great, but when it comes to organizing things into categories, my experience is that I rarely agree with the masses. And there are simply too many genre categories for my taste ... not to mention the arbitrary inclusion of some movies in certain categories while leaving out other more appropriate candidates...
And, isn't the communal approach already taking place on the scanner sites? So I like the OP, although I concede the multilingual issue stands apart from my petty personal desires. That might benefit a lot more from what you are talking about. I voted for it even if I would not, myself, use it -- because it would make for a more cosmopolitan product offering. ;)
As it looks to me now, I will need to go into each movie and individually re-tag them manually at some point if I intend to use genres.

Not sure if this would work different with German agents, but I had an issue with having hundreds of genres but after doing the following it dropped down to about 20 of them.
I fixed this by changing the agents order to having "The Movie Database" higher than Freebase, also I switched the sections default agent to the movie database. It seems Freebase syncs tags along with genres.
Than I did a "Force Refresh" in the sections more settings.

Very nice, Jeradin!
Turns out I had the agents configured as you described in Plex/Web settings, but one of my movie sections -- when created -- did not have the Movie Database above Freebase. And, sure enough, that was the section with the ridiculous number of genres.
I edited the out-of-control section and refreshed -- and bingo. Thank you for the help!
Note: Still, how can Back to the Future Parts II and III be categorized as Science Fiction, but not the first of the trilogy, Back to the Future.
Note 2: So when I look to fix that, it already lists the Science Fiction genre tag, and on subsequent filters of science fiction, it shows up ... hmmm. Makes me agree with everybody who says I'm nuts.
