Is it / could it be possible to hide items that are not in a collection? That would make it much easier to see what has not been “categorized” yet. I feel like it has been possible in the past, by choosing in the Advanced library options, “Hide items which are in collections”, but that doesn’t seem to work anymore, so maybe I had been mistaken.
You should be able to hide items that are contained in a collection at the Library level in the options located there. Go to your Library options and click Advanced. The collection view options are located there.
Bear in mind this will not cover every client, as the collection feature isn’t available everywhere yet.
Not every item has to be in a collection.

True, but it makes it easier to watch stuff in chronological order, especially when they are multiple shows, like the Arrowverse, but also for single-series stuff with specials that go in different spaces inbetween. Awesomeness all around!

If you have proper matching, those specials are in OnDeck at the right time. The ‘Originally Aired’ date is used to make it so.
