I am unable to get the PCM 7.1 audio to work on my apple tv 4. I know the apple tv 4 will output the 7.1 pct audio as I played a movie from the iTunes movies with 7.1. I only get 5.1 PCM output from plex. Please let me know how I can get this to work when I have a DTS-HD MA 7.1 or TrueHD 7.1 movie.
I have tried the Sony STR-DN1010 receiver and I just tried the Onkyo TX-NR757. Neither one will output PCM 7.1 to the receiver. I was able to get it to work on both receivers through the iTunes movies on the AppleTV.
Apple TV supports DD+ which is 7.1 but not DTS-HD MA or TrueHD. Plex would need to transcode those to DD+ 7.1 but it only transcodes them to DD which is 5.1.
So the problem is getting Plex to transcode to DD+ 7.1, not the hardware setup. There some other thread here about DD+ otherwise know as EAC3. A search should find them for you.
Is there a feature request to have plex transcode DTS-HD MA 7.1 and TrueHD 7.1 to DD+ 7.1 on AppleTV?
I have similar problems on my Apple TV 4K.
I found out that Infuse 6 Pro (with Plex integration) does Direct Play DTS-HD MA 7.1 as well as TrueHD 7.1. No transcoding, no compressing, full 8 channel sound.
Only downside is that the interface of Infuse is a lot worse than Plex itself…

Okay now that I’ve had my coffee Plex transcodes TrueHD 7,1 to FLAC (I’ve seen this on my video); I think it does the same for MA 7.1 but I’m not sure.

Well that’s the strange part. It does indeed do this for TrueHD, so that’s alright. But for DTS-HD MA 7.1, it says that it is Direct Playing the DTS-HD MA 7.1 stream, but my receiver only receives 5.1 sound from the AppleTV, not 7.1. If it where forced to transcode to FLAC 7.1 as well there would be no problem for me, since that is mostly the same. Big issue for me to mis the two channels from 7.1 to 5.1 though.
Here are two examples:
First one, TrueHD 7.1. Tautulli reports it is transcoding to FLAC 7.1, Receiver sees 7 channels + LFE.
Second one, DTS-HD MA 7.1. Tautulli reports it is Direct Playing DTS 7.1, Receiver sees 5 channels + LFE, so the bottom two speakers on the receiver are ‘missing’.
If this where also transcoded to something like FLAC 7.1. it would be fine.
For MA currently it plays the core track only. Easiest fix is to use Infuse I suppose.
I should probably clarify that it converts the core DTS track to PCM and plays that while Infuse is capable of converting True HD and DTS-MA tracks to PCM, while Plex converts True HD to FLAC on the server for Apple TV.
Plex should probably add the ability to convert DTS-MA to FLAC as well (well at least make it a user selectable option).

I have one other strange thing happening:
When Plex converts TrueHD 7.1 to FLAC 7.1, the surrounds channels and rear surround channels get switched… Anyone knowing a fix? (except switching the cables, since all other apps don’t have this problem (for example, Infuse))
