Is there a big difference in the speed when I use e.g.
a) stand-alone HomeRun box with e.g. my Plex server running on MAC mini
b) PCIe tuners on a dedicated Linux machine
c) USB tuners locally installed on a machine / NAS
Wondering if its worth it building a dedicated Linux machine with all Plex services incl. local PCIe tuners to make it as fast as possible… maybe its simply perfect on all the options out of the box and I am worrying too much for no reason. What is your experience?
I am very curious to give Live TV a try but I would like to max my chances to make it work as best as possible. I used to spend a lot of time tweaking this out on DVBlobic, MythTV, etc. but only come across many troubles.
I can imagine the speed would also be different on diffent clients, locally run Plex Theater, Plex on iOS, Apple TV, etc. thought it would be great if we could collect some information here based on existing experience guys will you contribute?
I would suspect it could also be related to what kind of broadcast to. If it is a prime on a provider that uses SDV it could be longer for channels that aren’t normally active.
It is dependent on the client and how fast your server is.
For example on my Apple TV 4 watching a channel is usually around 8-10 seconds to change channel as PMS has to transcode. It’s slow enough to be very annoying. At the moment half the time it doesn’t work on Apple TV anyway.
On an android TV box (when it worked on my Mi Box as the current Plex release Live TV no longer works) it was faster as the box could natively play some channels and transcoding audio for others. It was about 3-5seconds which was useable.
I have the same experience of time as @jayz78 for switching channels.
I seem to have. Better experience as my wife has started using Plex exclusively for LiveTV now (on ATV4).
