How I eliminated duplicates on PMS

Server Version#: 1.13.7.5369
Player Version#: 3.63.1

A few days ago Plex started counting the same movie file as a duplicate. When clicking “Get Info” for a file it would show two paths, which were exactly the same. Same file. Same metadata. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but it’s been intermittent for me.

My solution was the following:

  1. Split apart the Movie in question
  2. Move the movie’s folder outside of the library folder
  3. From the resulting split, delete one of the two entries in PMS
  4. Empty library trash, clean up bundles, and optimize the PMS database (all of this may be unnecessary, but I did it for good measure)
  5. Move the movie folder back in to the PMS library
  6. Re-scan the Library

Not sure why PMS started doing this or if there is a more appropriate way to fix and/or prevent it from happening in the future. But I hope this helps anyone else who is having the same issue.

Check the paths that your library is suppose to scan. Do you happen to have a folder and it’s parent both listed?

i.e. If your movie is in C:\MyMovies\New\Movie-1.mp4 and your library has C:\MyMovies and C:\MyMovies\New, this can happen.

Hi and thanks for replying!

I do not. Each library has a single root path, e.g. F:\Movies for the Movies library and F:\TV for the TV Shows library. There’s no nesting.

Also, for some reason I can no longer get the movie agent to default to The Movie Database even though it’s weighted higher than Plex Movie. Any time Plex attempts to match a movie it defaults to Plex Movie which is very hit or miss. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

thanx it was a easy fix !

The default movie agent is set by your library. Edit your library and check the agent used.

Got it, thanks! That’s fixed. I really appreciate the support.
