I'd like to use DVR/LiveTV for Plex, but my Plex server is not at home.

So, the situation is my plex server is running in a datacenter (OVH) so that way i don’t use my home internet when accessing my plex from somewhere else.

I’d like to add DVR/LiveTV to my setup, but i’m wondering if my remote plex server would be able to connect to the DVR hardware i would install at home. I guess that type of setup is meant to be local, and i don’t want to purchase that hardware if its not possible to remotely connect the plex server (remote) to the DVR hardware (local).

Your insights are welcome!

Thanks a lot,

I have seen one other user post on the forum that they were running a remote server that was utilizing a HDHR tuner on their local home network. However, they had the ability to setup a VPN connection between networks so the remote server saw the HDHR as if it was on their local network. if you have that capability you might be able to get it to work. The HDHR device must be able to be seen on the same network subnet as the Plex Sever.

IMO, I would setup a Plex Server on your home network just for the DVR as you’d have to use your home internet connection regardless for the DVR/Live TV function.

you guys helped a lot. ill try the vpn option!!

thanks

Setup VPN services on the server. Then open up a VPN tunnel / connection to the server from home and assign an address with correct IP/subnet to the MAC address of the network Tuner at your house. Then go back log into the server and you should be able to see the tuner from the server. This is a VERY VERY cut down crude overview. If your familiar with Network TCP/IP a little research and you should be able to do it. I would start by looking into a router that can handle VPN services and install it at your house. Although you’re defeating the reason you use a offsite server to begin with. Plus the data back and forth from your house including the VPN tunnel. You better have a good up/down internet connection and preferably a symmetrical one.

I would use an HDHomeRun Extend so that It would transcode to mp4 at the device. This way less network bandwidth would be required to transmit the data stream from your home to the datacenter. Using an HDHomeRUn Conect, an mpeg2 data stream would require about 18-19 mb/sec. Depending on the quality you required, you could transcode it down to 2-4 mb/sec.
