Latest Plex Update causing Roku 2 XS to crash or exit

Since the most recent update with the News channel added, my Roku 2 either crashes or exits back to the home screen out of the Plex app after streaming a show for about a minute. Sometimes it exits and sometimes Roku restarts with the bouncing screen. All other apps on Roku are fine. My Samsung Plex at works correctly. Any ideas or is it just time to upgrade Roku?

Let me guess…your also on Plex ver 5.0.1?

I could have written that post myself, actually when reading it I had to check to see if it was mine since I have the same problems, right down to Plex working fine on my Samsung app.

Over on the Roku boards people are having issues with the Roku 7.7 FW and seem to be placing the blame there, even though my problems, and I’m assuming yours as well, just started with the latest Plex release. I’ve been running the 7.7 Roku FW since mid-August problem free. See here: http://bit.do/dPdJu

No idea where we are on getting this fixed, does the Plex devs even know of the problem? Feedback on here is, IMHO, like writing a letter to the almighty.

News Flash:
if you’re not on Roku FW 7.7 Build 4139 - which fixes older Roku Models affected by 7.7 - you’re just guessing.

Did the recent Plex app updatre trigger something in 7.7 causing it to do the same thing it’s doing for other people that it didn’t used to do to you? Speculation - until we hear from @ljunkie you’re guessing - like I am.

Is there a pretty good chance it’s all related to the current 7.7 Disaster Movie in progress at Roku Inc?
I’d bet on that horse.

This post is exactly where I am at. Every other channel on my Roku 2 works. Plex(5.0.1) loads any video from any source plays it for about 1min then crashes to channel screen or resets the Roku.

Plex works perfectly fine from all sources with any video through its app in my Sony Blu-ray player.

Solved…

On Roku Forums, RokuShawnS posted his email address and offered a downgrade to 7.6 until 8.0 rolls out over the next month. The 7.6 downgrade worked for me on my Roku 2 XS.

He NEEDS your serial and model numbers and a specific subject line. The link to the forum page is below, as I do not want to post his email address in this forum. See post #740

Why not?
Roku created this monster - let them deal with killing it - and if you think ssmith@roku.com isn’t under total and complete attack by irate users numbering in the thousands - you haven’t thought this through.

I just did this and my Plex on Roku 2 XD is working fine now, no more crashing after 1-2 mins of playback.

Home:5x, FF:3x, RW:2x Menu and just Re-Update to same version… lol… may be a fluke, might work for others though!

This did not work for my Roku 2 XD. I really wished it did. Maybe somebody else can try and test results. The secret screen was cool though, didn’t know it existed. I wished there was an option for software rollback. I didn’t see one.

I got tired of waiting. Since My Roku 3 works fine with the updated 7.7, I decided to just pick up another Roku 4. All running on 7.7 and works fine as it was not affected by the software update. Maybe this is a sign to just upgrade to a better/newer box.

We are running into a memory limitation issue on Roku 2XS/2XD and other seconds generation models. We released an update to our Plex Pass channel this morning to help alleviate some of those issues. It’s possible a crash may still occur due to memory limitations. We are working with Roku on the final resolution, that may require changes on their end.

having the same issue. seem to be able to get around it by simply rebooting my roku before using plex. it works 9/10 times for me but still VERY annoying.

posting this in all the related posts. just trying to help everyone get by

Roku is at least admitting now that they know there’s a problem, but they don’t seem to be doing much to fix it. I emailed asking to get the rollback to 7.6, but I don’t hold out much hope. Right now, I just go right back into Plex after it boots me out. It takes awhile to watch something, but it’s still better than watching on my laptop.

I’ve got a new Roku on my Christmas list, but it really makes me cranky to be forced to buy a new one.

Same problem here 2XS - The Plex Classic version works just fine, though. I wish Roku didn’t have forced updates - they usually just make things worse, and benefit Roku more than the users.

Similar problems on Roku 4
FYI

Looks like a Plex App issue to me…

#16

Oh and BTW.
This is just a heads up.
I know it will never get fixed anyway…

If it is, I’m rather confident @ljunkie can find and fix it, but right now those efforts would probably be wasted.
We already know Roku Firmware 7.7 is a complete disaster and Roku has stopped with their feeble attempts to deal with it - opting instead to make everyone wait for what they believe will be a miracle cure - OS8 for Roku.

What happens when OS-8 arrives is anyone’s guess, but we’re all going to find out very soon. Once Roku lays that golden egg, @lunkie will have his hands full, so he’s probably eating his Wheaties and working the Speed-Bag so he’ll be in top shape when it arrives.

I think I read somewhere that Plex is blaming Roku and it is a memory issue related to the current (New) Roku OS…
If that s the case… Why not FIX the Roku app to deal with the OS issue??

Oh and incidentally…
Microsoft makes OS changes ALL that time without ANY warning.
It often can cause applications to stop working…
The normal course of events is the developer MUST make the code run under the new OS.
So I sorta think Plex needs to get working on fixing their app to conform to the OS NOT just sit around and wait complaining the OS needs to be fixed…
Classic “Buck Passing” of the software Biz…

Me too – Plex Classic works just fine. I don’t know if it’s still available, I’ve been using it for years. Every time PLEX fucks something up, I just go back to Classic.

It’s mentioned at the beginning of this thread from 2015 :

It doesn’t have all the bloated crap of the newer versions, but it is SOLID on my 2XS.

Oh yea, I still prefer RARflix for Roku and before I was one of the lucky few that ‘eventually’ got the 7.7 4139 ‘Fixed’ version my Roku 3 4200x was a hockey puck shaped brick - unless I used RARflix for Roku.

I don’t have any illusions that RARflix will work forever. Each update, it seems, something else either goes missing or misbehaves and one day it’s not going to be a viable alternative to whatever nightmare Plex is offering in the App Department.

I am STILL confident that no matter what that nightmare is, @ljunkie will be able to make the Roku Version of the nightmare less scary than any other version - and also feel sure that anything that could be done about the current situation has been done. We also know that he’s got at least one raven flying back and forth from Castle Plex to Castle Roku - the problem is that Roku’s Archers keep shooting down the Plex Ravens.

lol
