LG TV unable to connect to Plex Media Server on PC

TV: LG CX 65" OLED
PC: custom build
Internet: ATT fiber optic 100 mbps
Modem: ATT BGW210

I can see the server when in the Plex app on my TV, but it won’t connect for some reason. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Plex on both my TV and PC (I have both Plex and Plex Media Server installed). After doing this, I’m able to stream some movies to my TV for a few minutes, then for some reason it stops working. I’ve had on and off issues like this for a while now, seems like I have to scan media files all over again every time for it to work.

I went into “Port Forwarding” and input TCP 32400 as suggested and made it available to the TV device, but it still doesn’t work.

32400 is for remote access to your server. It shouldn’t have anything to do with your TV accessing the server locally.

is everything working fine on your computer when accessed through the web app in browser? Needing to rescan everything would be the server loosing access to file.

ahhhhh makes sense. I won’t mess with that any further.

Yep, just checked 3 different movies, working fine when played on my PC through Plex!

Needing to rescan everything would be the server loosing access to file.

I thought this was due to my external HD getting unplugged, but I attempted to rule that out by copying all the movies to my internal storage hard drive. I deleted the old movie folders from Plex then completely rescanned them from the internal hard drive. They are playing fine on the local computer, but my TV only played them a few times, now it won’t, and will not connect to the Plex server via the Plex app on the TV for some reason.

Can you log into the app fine on TV. does it show you avatar circle (or first letter of username)

I made a bit of an error in my description. 32400 is the local port needed to access server locally or remotely but port forwarding in router is only need for remote access. Check that your pc firewall is not blocking 32400.

Also on your servers network settings if you have multiple network interfaces. change this Preferrred Nework interface setting to the primary one for its local IP on the network.

I’m realizing part of the problem may be that I neglected to mention I have Nord VPN installed on this PC as well. However, it is not installed on the router, or the TV. Just the PC and my phone. I turned nord off, it did not help at all.

I can log into the TV app just fine, states my email in the top. Just won’t connect to server.

I’m unsure how exactly to check if my PC firewall is blocking 32400. I opened windows firewall and it appears plex is allowed on public and private networks?

One thing I did notice is that the network was set to public. I changed it to private, but now it appears to have both enabled? Private says “network” public says “nord.”

My Preferred Network is now set to “ethernet” instead of “nord” where it was previously.

There is also a red exclamantion mark by the “remote access” part.

Sounds like the firewall is fine then

NordVPN won’t allow you to use remote access if you ever choose to as it does not allow port forwarding in itself. Looking at that remote access page it seems to think that Nord network is your local network. As far as I know 10.5.0.2 is Nord assigned address. your TV likely has an IP that begins with 192 like 192.168.1.5. Which basically means that your server and TV are like they are two different networks

If you did change your servers preferred interface setting to the one that starts with 192 then I think you need to restart the server for it to show up there as the Private/local IP.

OK, so I disabled Nord and signed out of Plex on both my TV and my PC, and hit exit on both so they were not running. They are the current versions. I signed back in and tried to restart my server, which took a while for some reason, and now it shows a different screen on the “remote access” section. It shows that remote access is “fully accessible outside your network” but shows unknown ip address. TV was still unable to connect to server. After Nord restarted, the server was unable to connect, so I disabled it and restarted it again, and this time it shows the IP addresses like you said it would. Plex on my TV is still totally unable to connect to my server. It did play one video, then when I tried to play other videos they wouldn’t work, then the first video I played also wouldn’t work.

Here are some screenshots:

First time I restarted the server after disconnecting from Nord:

Did I read something wrong in my firewall settings?
