Not sure where to start on this one. Basically, a couple months ago I noticed that I was no longer able to display subtitles on any of my movies. Some of the movies are using .SRT’s while others have the subtitles encoded into the video file and must be selected. Regardless, none of them will actually display when being played on my Roku. Curiously, TV shows do not share this problem. I’d originally assumed that this was just a minor bug and would be resolved in an update, but we’re a few months out now with no changes.
I’ve been having this same issue for a few weeks. Even films with forced subtitles don’t display. It doesn’t matter if I set the server to Always show or not, or what subtitle track I select on the Roku. The subs display fine on other devices.
Have you hit the * button and set the Subtitle Mode (while an item is playing)?
Always on - Roku Wide
On Replay - Roku Wide
Off - Roku Wide
Alternately, the mode can be set from the Playback Options in the Pre-Play as well.
Yes, it takes constant fiddling.
I have Subs Always On selected for my Plex User Account, then try to keep ‘On Replay’ selected on the Roku (* during playback - or from Playback Options) - that seems to be my most popular mode. I do go Always On at times in the * mode - then need to turn it off when Viewing Amazon/NHK World/Etc.
Roku INC. is responsible for the awful selections - any display options you activate in the Plex App will be activated platform wide - and there isn’t a thing we can do about it. Us or Plex… unfortunately.
It wasn’t very popular when Roku Invented it - it’s still not very popular - But Roku solved that problem by removing the community (for all intents and purposes). Silence is golden…
@JuiceWSA That was it, thank you. Someone must have set that without paying attention. I have three Roku 3’s right now and a Roku TV. They started annoying me when the Twitch app stopped working. I’d like to start transitioning over to Apple TV.
