Moving my Plex Media Server from an old Mac Pro to a new M4 Mac Mini

Hello,

I’m currently running my Plex media server on an old mid 2010, Mac Pro, cheese grater and will be getting a M4 Mac Mini. Most of my media is on a Synology NAS and my shortly watched then deleted media is on one, separate, hard drive. I have a few questions and would also like any other tips on migrating to the M4 Mac mini.

To transfer my media server, should I just download the Plex media server from the internet, log in and set it up like I did on the previous computer; or should I connect the mini to the old cheese grater and do the Apple “migration”?

I have copied the Plex Media Server folder, found in the Application Support folder, inside my User Library. I think this is all the meta data for movies etc. Can I put this in my new User Library on my M4 Mac Mini?

I read, on this forum, that Mac OS 15 has trouble with SMB Synology NAS, which is how I have my NAS setup, should I try to run Mac OS 14 on the M4 Mac Mini?

Are there any other things I should do?
Thank you for any helps

I do not run PMS on a Mac, so unsure how well the Apple migration works for Plex.

The traditional method of moving between servers is outlined in Move an Install to Another System.

Note that if you copy the plist file (mentioned in Copy Additional Server Settings section), you cannot run both servers at the same time, as they will have the same name and ID.

If you skip copying the plist file, you can run both servers at the same time. The new server will have a different name and you will have to re-pin libraries on your home page, re-share (but not re-invite) with anyone you share with, etc. The advantage is that you can run both servers at the same time, migrating traffic to the new server when you are comfortable doing so (no hot cutovers).

If accessing both servers remotely and using fixed port forwarding, you will need a second port forward statement in your router using a different public port numbers (the internal port is always 32400).

You can modify the nsmb.conf file on the Mac or use NFS instead of SMB.
See Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing

Thanks for the links to the “Move an Install to Another System,” and to the “Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing” pages.

I will just be transferring the server to the new computer so I think just following that page will guide me through moving my server.

As for Mac OS 15 and SMB problems I’ll try uploading the nsmb.conf file from github.

Through Google I’ve seen many people on Mac OS 15 having trouble with SMB and have looked on Synology forums. I have seen some of the fixes like: make sure username starts with a capitol letter, also the smb setting should be Server signing status: Force.

My Synology username starts with a capitol letter and I changed the Server signing status to Force, although when I upload the nsmb.conf file, I’ll change it back to default since the file makes “signing=required=no”. It looks like Apple wanted signing required.

Again thank you for your help
