MP3tag and Metadata and the Plex Local Media Assets (Movies) Agent

I’m using MP3tag to update MP4 metadata so that the Plex “Local Media Assets (Movies)” Agent can parse the MP4 metadata so the scanner can populate the Plex database (which in turn is used to populate Plex screens and search engines).

Following is a list of Plex edit panel field names followed by the corresponding MP3tag Tag Panel fieldname. If there’s no entry after the dash, there is no corresponding MP3tag Tag Panel field name, at least none of which I’m aware. (Note that PODCASTDESC is not on the MP3tag Tag Panel by default, but it’s easy to add.)

PLEX GENERAL PANEL
Title - TITLE
Sort Title
Original Title
Originally Available - YEAR
Studio
Tagline
Summary - PODCASTDESC

PLEX TAG PANEL
Directors
Country
Genres - GENRE
Writers
Producers
Collections - ALBUM

NOT PRESENT ON PLEX PANEL (but work)
ARTIST (i.e., cast)
COVER - POSTER

So although the list of fields that can be passed from MP3tag to PLEX is sparse, the truly essential fields do so without much tweaking. Still, it would be helpful to be able to populate Plex fields such as Directors and Writers via metadata.

So here’s the question (finally): Does anyone know of a reasonably straightforward way to pass data fields from MP3tag to Plex, apart from the ones above?

Alternatively, does anyone know of a more appropriate MP4 metadata editor than MP3tag? As the name MP3tag implies, the main thrust of MP3tag is MP3 files, and the fact that MP3tag is the best MP4 metadata editor I know of indicates either that the field of MP4 editors is very small, or I’m just not good at ferreting out MP4 metadata editors. I’ve tried Wondershare Uniconverter and as an MP4 metadata editor I give it a firm thumbs-down, although it is very good at some other things.

Note 1: Florian has added DIRECTOR to MP3tag, and DIRECTOR presumably ends up in the MP4 metadata as ©dir (which is the standard MP4 name for Director). But the PLEX agent apparently doesn’t recognize the tag, because it doesn’t show up in PLEX.

Note 2: I am aware of the ITUNMOVI tag and its role, BUT MP3tag doesn’t directly support the ITUNMOVI tag either. Not to mention the fact that maintaining metadata via XML is awkward at best.

Note 3: As a kind of an aside, the Windows “Properties > Details” dialog for MP4 files gives the appearance of supporting practically everything - including (but not limited to) Directors, Producers, Writers, and Publisher (which I assume would correspond to Distributor, as opposed to Studio). The problem is that with the exception of Title and Cast, almost nothing entered via Properties > Details is recognized by EITHER Plex or MP3tag.

Thanks mate. Had to find my logon credentials to just get in here and let you know you had the details I needed. I am adding old Super8mm family movies to Plex, but want to metadata contained within the files for futureproofing and not relying on adding via the Plex UI.

PODCASTDESC was what I was after.

Ill just add for anyone else’s benefit, the “Originally Available - YEAR” tag format is “YYYY-MM-DD” eg. 1965-04-01.
